“One of our best ever holidays!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2012 via mobile

We stayed 4 nights and had a fantastic overall experience. The location is perfect and only a short drive from the airport. The lodge is small so even when full there'll be no more than about 45-50 guests. The newer rooms are wonderfully furnished and spacious with some of the older smaller rooms comfortable but in need of some work (the reason why its only 4 out of 5 stars in my opinion/ review). As a family, we used 4 of the rooms, having to move mid stay due to a small problem with one of the older rooms. The staff were very friendly and attentive and always willing to help and go the extra mile. Our room problem was resolved quickly and efficiently and handled extremely well by the hotel management. The food quality was also excellent and the chef approachable and willing to provide everything we requested. Of course, the main reason for staying here was to go on safari. And we were not disappointed! We were extremely fortunate to have a wonderful ranger and tracker during the time we were there. We could not praise Jade and Petro enough and would recommend them every time. Their extensive knowledge about the whole ecosystem- as well as the game- was extremely impressive and made our holiday. We saw all of the big 5, however, saw, learned and enjoyed so much more than that.

The rooms and amenities were great. It's a new lodge, so they had some issues like not having working phones in my and my friend's room. Not a huge deal, but for the first afternoon of our trip, our toilet wasn't flushing, so that was a bit annoying. Again, I brushed this aside. The food was decent overall, but not spectacular. The thing that ruined our safari was the ranger who took us on our tour. This ranger, "W," was rude and unfriendly to me and my friends. We were three Americans of color, and it was unfortunately rather clear from some of his statements that he was both a racist and anti-American. Some of the comments he made to our entire safari troupe were uncalled for and made us feel at best uncomfortable, at worst downright upset. The general and wait-staff were nice enough, but we had to follow up with them more than we thought necessary. For instance, we had to ask a couple of times about when to be picked up to go the airport, and when we finally got to the office for pick-up, we were told someone would drive us a half-hour later. Between the awful rantings of a ranger who clearly shouldn't be working with foreigners, to these slight hiccups along the way, we left rather disappointed in the whole experience.

We are a couple from Brazil and we did book this hotel because they classify themselves as a 5 stars hotel. In my opinion a 5 stars has to have just on thing. An outstanding service.

We are here right now while i am writting this review and today we had some bad experiences with the service they offer. Lets start with something that for us is very simple but for them seemed to be something very complicated. When we arrived at the hotel we received a letter with all the schedule and timetable of all the activities. For the breakfast and the lunch there is a time to begin and to end but for the dinner they only write a time to begin, at 8pm. I was not feeling well and we arrived to eat at 9:30pm, but for our surprise looks like the dinner was finishing. Besides of that, our host, told us when we arrived that if we want anything different just to ask for, so we did it. I just wanted a pasta wih tomato sauce.

First of all there were nobody serving in the restaurant what made us look for somebody in the kitchen. After that request everything started. They felt us so unwelcome and had an attitude very far from a 5 stars.First saying that cook the tomato for the sauce will take too much time.Second showing us the time for dinner has finished. And they didnt even write it down, so we couldnt know that. Then I decided to ask for an omelete.I could not eat the food thay were serving as i was not feeling well of my stomach. They cooked it but at that time I was feeling so bad with this kind of service and decided to look for the manager.Well the manager was not there and there was someone encharged who seemed not to care as well.

Another important thing is If there is anything just dial 9. But there is no telephone in the room. There was no manager at the hotel and even in the website there was nowhere to place a complaint.Very dissapointing.

If you used to a Five Stars and are an exigent person you better not to stay here.

A wonderful place, would definitely recommend it.

The place is quite small, which makes it relaxing and personal, and all of the staff where really friendly and helpful. We stayed in a suit, and it had everything you can wish for, we are quite picky when it comes to hotels, but this place is really top notch. Your ranger will pick you up at the airport for free, so it was very convenient getting there as well.

The food was also very good, they served a buffet for both lunch and dinner, I usually don't fancy buffets, but the quality of this buffet was very good, with bbq and several other choices for each meal we had. Drinks are not included in the tariff.

We had the same ranger taking us on safari each day in a 11 seat open land rover, and we where never more than 7 guests at any game drive in the same land rover. We spotted all big five except for the leopard. We did see two cheetahs right outside of the camp, which was amazing, we followed them for maybe 15 minutes, and they walked just a few meters from us. Apparently the cheetahs have their territory around the camp, so chances of seeing them should be good. The only thing that I think could have been better was that the bush walks (included in the tariff) where not offered unless asked for, and they didn’t do them every day. However, when we did the bushwalk it was great, we where in a small group and the ranger where really good at telling us things about the animal and the bush, and then it made things even better that we saw lions resting under a three (the rangers where armed so we felt safe).

Would definitelly go back to this place!

If you want a quieter, more personalized experience at Kapama - skip the River Lodge and stay at Southern Camp. Max guests are 35 people at any time and while we were there it ranged from 9 - 15 guests. The manager and staff are lovely, friendly, and so helpful and the rangers (we had head ranger Mike) are extremely knowledgeable and fun to listen to (at dinner or on game drives).

I will say, however, that the standard rooms are disappointing and will not meet your expectations after browsing the Kapama website. Those are the rooms that were refurbished from the previous lodge owners. On the other hand, the chalet suites were fantastic! They are brand new and beautiful. Definitely ask for a suite if you want amazing value for your money.

This was the first place in Krugar we stayed during our month in South Africa. The staff are really nice especially Mike our bush walk guide. Our room was very nice and the grounds were beautiful. They even have a resident porcupine named Elvis that comes around for some tidbits of food during dinner. Food was very good as well.

This is quite a basic lodge but is set in lovely location and the simplicity of the structures is charming. Lodge could do with some maintenance around swimming pool which was not prepared for swimming. The open air brai (BBQ) was great with a new resident porcupine Elvis omnipresent! The lodge has a wonderful viewing platform with two regular visiting white rhinos.
