“Can't ask for more”

My wife and myself spent 2 nigths on Buffalo Camp. It is an excelent place to be. The staff is very gentle and they'll do their best for you to see as many animal as possible. They will go out of the way if necessary (watch your head, because the pass just bellow the trees). I think sleeping in those tents is really amazing. Drinking coffee 20 meters by a rhino was just excellent.

Have just returned home, following our first trip to South Africa. We had 4 days at Buffalo Camp, and what a fabulous experience it was. From the pickup at the airport to the last day,we were treated like friends of the staff rather than just guests. The accomodation was great,as you got to see animals under the walkways. We saw deer, mongoose & 2 warthogs wollowing in mud.The game drives were great fun,a little patience required, but we saw 4 of the Big Five, with some very close encounters!!.The food in camp was excellent with plenty of choice. One night we ate round a camp fire.So thanks to Natalie & Charles,Johann & the gorgeous Devan for making it such a memorable trip.

This was my first Safari experience, and i approached it with open eyes.

I had heard a lot of negatives about the game viewing, and indeed the accomodation itself.

It turns out I had NOTHING to worry about.

From the pickup at the Airstrip a mere three-four minutes away, in an open top landrover whisking us to the accomodation right down the the wake up "knocks" from our ranger, I could not have asked for more

The accomodation was clean and serviced both well and regularly. The food was very good (although could have been hotter once or twice). However, for me, the service made the entire trip (excepting hte Game viewing, but more of that later !)

The Camp consists of 8 tents settled in the tops of trees. Linked by wooden walkways to the Main camp where there is a nice Bar, a Boma (outdoor dining area), and a restaurant. There is also a small reception are with a curio shop selling bits and bobs if you need souveniers etc.

So, enough of the accomodation, and onto the BIG thing....The Game Viewing !

A typical day starts at around 5am with your wake up call. A ranger will then meet you for coffee and a cake (at 5.15am !) after which you go out into the 9 Seater Land Rover. Comfortable seats and Blankets are a welcome addition , and your Game drive has begun

You then drive around the reserve until around 930am. During our first day, we saw 4 of the Big 5 (the leopard proving elusive).

I have to point out what (to me anyway) was a BIG plus for Kapama. I have heard that in Kruger (for example) it is ONLY possible to drive on the roads. So if a Lion is spotted 200 yards away, your ranger will tell you "look...A lion 200 yards away".

This is where Kapama differs. We heard on the radio (all 12 rangers are linked via radio allowing constant accurate communication between the rangers on whereabouts of animals) that there were 2 Lionesses and 4 cubs in the east part of the reserve. At this point, we tore throught the bush and literally cut through Swathes of trees and undergrowth to get within 6 feet of the Lionessses and cubs who had just made a kill.

Amongst what we saw were , (in no particular order!), Lion, Buffalo, Elephant, Rhino, Zebra, Giraffe (loads!), Kudu and many other antelope, Birds of prey and MANY others

Overall I would rate Kapama (and especially the attentive staff) very highly and would have no hesitation in reccomending it for just about all types of people.

If anyone would like any advice/information, please feel free to email me !

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Reminiscent of a traditional African safari camp, Kapama Buffalo Camp offers a unique and intimate experience in the African bush. It is ideal for discovering big game Africa in true safari tented style without compromising on comfort.Ten luxury build canvas tents, each sleeping two, are set on wooden decks built on stilts over a steep-sided riverbank. Wooden walkways interconnect the rooms, which are all in the upper reaches of tall riverine trees. The river below rarely flows and antelopes are seen daily walking along the sandy riverbed. Each tented room has all the usual comforts of electricity, en-suite bathroom, safe, writing table, wardrobe, low impact climate control, mini-bar and tea/coffee facilities. The communal areas of Buffalo Camp are on the riverbank, where gardens of succulent aloes and euphorbia are tended around the thatched bar, dining room, pool terrace and campfire. But the thick African bush is just a glance away, inhabited by animals like lion, hyena and jackal whose calls can be heard in the dead of night. Lanterns, rather than electric lights, glow at night under the trees, creating a special intimate ambience particular to Buffalo Camp. With a maximum of 20 guests at Buffalo Camp, special attention is paid to personal service and the staff become like friends. Kapama Buffalo Camp is a truly authentic way to experience the African bush. ... more   less
