Ezulwini Game Lodges
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 7, 2012

My wife and I recently spent 2 nights each at Ezulwini's two lodges (Billy's and River) in the greater Kruger National Park. Both were excellent facilities with hospitable staff and expert guides/trackers. We saw the Big 5 and enjoyed wonderful food, wine, and fellow guests from around the world. Billy's is larger, newer, and fancier including its own wine cellar. The owner hosted a wonderful pre-dinner wine tasting and introduction on our first day. Still, we liked the variety of 2 nights in each place. 4 nights total felt just right.

Having been to the 3 Ezulwini Lodges (River, Billy's and Paradise Camp) in August 2008 we had always planned to return. We invited our neighbours and returned in March this year to Billy's. The new accommodation at Billy's is 5 star and I would recommend to anyone wanting a comfortable bush experience. Our host Lawrence and his staff ensured that our stay was rewarding and he has ensured our return visit in a couple of years.
The game drives early in the morning known as "sunrises" are the most exciting and it is worth the early rise to see the bush come alive. The evening ones known as "sundowners" are spectacular as well as you witness magical sunsets while sipping on your favourite drink. It is a photographer's paradise. The trackers knowledge of the bush and the wildlife is very impressive and we learn new things with each drive.
If you make the journey ask the trackers to show you the other lodges so you will see the changing landscape and animals. Watching a sunset from the viewing platform at Paradise Camp looking across at the escarpment in the distance changing colour as the sun goes down is another indelible impression.

Room Tip: Choose a Rondaval that is furthest from the main area as you see more animals on your walks to and f...

Beautiful spot. Very nice helpful staff. Food good and plentiful. Would recommend for couples on safari. Small unheated swimming pool. Surrounded by monkeys, buck and giraffe. On first day ,already spotted warthog, Impala, Buck, Black Rhino and Buffalo. Looking forward to more sightings and lots more restful sleep in this little idyl.

We stayed at Billy's lodge at the beginning of May 2012, I researched 100's of options before deciding on Billy's Lodge as I like the look of the lodge.

We made the right choice the accomodation, walk ways, Viewing area's, food, wine and staff were amazing, I would highly reccomend the lodge to anyone. In the morning we would see giarettes walking around the grounds as we were having our coffee before our early morning game drive.

The safari was amazing and we had excellent trackers, we managed to see everything apart from the leopard which is one of he hardest animals to spot, we had a once in a life time experience here and would love to revisted one day.

Lawerence the owner and his family made such an effort to mix and make the guests feel welcome, we were even treated to a trip to Lawerence's wine cellar and told the history behind the lodge.

We stay for 3 nights and left feeling very relaxed, we didn't stay at river lodge but other guests said they enjoy both lodges.

We would reccomend the drive from Johannesburg airport as there are some amazing places to stop and see on the way, I would reccomend hiring a four wheel drive, it takes about 6-7 hours and stop at The Blyde River Canon and take the Panorama Route if you have time.

There are a few negative reviews wrote on here, which are completly unfair and they must have stayed somewhere else or drove around asleep as there are loads of animals to see, the place is magical.

Thanks for an amazing experience,

Nat and Jem

This is one of those trips where you never ever imagine you would really do it and then when you are there are truly amazed that you did it. I don't know how to really express how great everyone here was. We stayed at the private chateau which was like a private home. We had a dip pool and would wake up in the morning with wildebeest and other animals running around in the distance. We always saw animals on our drive and our trackers definitely had a special skill. Off roading was ridiculous. Who would have thought that going on a safari meant you didn't have to worry about ANYTHING the entire time you were there. All meals, snacks, etc taken care of. I would highly recommend this to every and any one who wants to go on a safari. They will make you want to move there.

Everything everyone said in the 5 star reviews of Ezulwini is true (and those one or two complainers must have stayed somewhere else and gotten confused). Both the River Lodge and Billy's Lodge are great - the River Lodge is more remote, but that makes it all the more charming. The "chalets" are lovely, comfortable, and very private, and the staff are extremely accommodating and knowledgeable. On the game drives, we saw leopards, lions, cape buffalo, giraffes, zebras, elephants, hippos, and virtually every other animal and bird that lives in the African bush. And, we got very close to them in open jeeps. Between drives, we loved hanging out in the observation towers, reading our books, and watching animals wander up to the watering holes. It was very peaceful and exciting at the same time. We'd love to return one day and wouldn't think of staying anywhere else.

Room Tip: We stayed in "standard" chalets at both lodges and they were extremely nice. We saw the lu...
