Owner description: Ski Apache opened under the name "Sierra Blanca Ski Resort" during Christmas of 1961. Amazingly, twenty-six hundred people an hour were fast carried up the ski run crest via three T-bar lifts. In 1962, the very first mono-cable four-passenger gondola in North America was built to accommodate a greater number of skiers. And it seems just in time as twenty-five thousand skiers showed up for the second season. Since 1963, the resort has been owned and operated by the Mescalero Apache Tribe. Only two years after its official opening in 1961, Robert O. Anderson, the wealthy oil man who built and opened the slopes, sold the resort to the able hands of the Mescalero Apaches. It wasn't until the 1984-85 season that the slopes were appropriately named "Ski Apache". The wood-spired Main Lodge was designed by Victor Lundy ... Proclaimed as America's Outstanding Architect in 1958. Since the opening season of 1961, this lodge has stood statuesque, an unfailing sentry below the crest. With wood spires reflective of the surrounding pines, the Lodge mirrors the natural beauty of the Sacramento Mountains. Lundy succeeded in introducing Modernism architecture with a practical eye towards the skiers needs. Ski Apache offers world class skiing, snowboarding, sightseeing, mountain biking, and the longest zip line in the lower 48 states.

If you want to experience beautiful breath taking views, sign up for the zip line at the ski Apache! 11,500 feet up...not only do you catch some spectacular views from this mountain while zip lining, the drive (ride-we were on our Harley) for the 12 mile trip up and back down the mountain was truly a must see! Be sure you have your camera and dress warm. We zipped over the snowy mountain filled with pines and awesome scenery! A go pro is the best on this ride! I would and probably will definitely do this again!! Thank you wonderful people at Ski Apache for a fun filled time!!

Beware! Zip Line at your own risk!!!! On July 1, 2015 my family went on this zip line. Most of the staff were helpful, nice and informative. The first part of the zip line, the longest, went great. The attendee who secured our gear was very thorough and followed every safety precaution. The same can NOT be said for the second length. The woman was in a hurry and didn't get my daughter secured properly. My daughter's gear let go before the attendees at the bottom were ready and they didn't have the previous rider's gear off of the line. When my daughter was coming down, her brake did not work. Thank God for the springs at the end. When she hit the end, at a VERY high rate of speed, she hit the other rider's gear and then the springs. Some part of the equipment broke through the helmet and cut her head, 13 staples. Her feet hit the springs and fractured her foot in 3 places. We were all there to see this horrible event. Another rider with our group was an EMT. She was able to help immediately. Every employee, except the woman responsible, was every helpful and concerned for my daughter. We did get a refund for all our group, but no medical expenses will be recovered. You cannot sue for this because it happened on Tribal Land. Lesson learned: Never do any activity that relies on attendant for your safety.

Ski Apache is beautiful! And there's so much to do! You can go skiing, snowboarding, inner-tubing, ride the gondolas, or just play in the snow! They also have rentals for those who don't have equipment, and they have lessons too. A great place for winter fun!

Being from Ruidoso, but not have been home in 42 years, I just had to drive up what we used to "Ole Baldy". the peak was so high no trees grew. when we arrived at the ski lodge, it began to snow and made an already breathtaking view that much more beautiful. It seemed to bring out the wildlife.....eagles, falcons deer, bear and even the fox........just AWESOME!

We love adventure so when we found out they had ziplining on the ski mountain, we were all IN! We called for a reservation (strongly recommended) and were scheduled for 11 am on a Saturday. The website says call before driving up to make sure weather is okay, we called and there was fog, so we were postponed, no big deal because we called ahead. The last time we called they told us to head up on the mountain. Everyone was about an hour behind, BUT it was weather nothing the company could do about it and I was happy because they were making sure everyone would be safe!

We did the beginner zip to learn the brakes etc. Then our group headed up the ski lift, we got to the top of the ski lift and then were taken by half-track the rest of the way to the top. They offer tandem lines, so we could ride together. Now, this is really high up there on the mountain and way above the trees. I have a terrible fear of heights, but I was up there and there is no backing out once you get there. The 1st zip line is a little over a mile long and you reach speeds of up to 65 MPH, it's fast, fun & terrifying all at the same time!!!!!!!!!! The next 2 zip lines were shorter but just as fast! you MUST follow directions from the guides. All of our guides were GREAT! they were funny & helpful and patient with this chicken! We had a blast and we would totally do it again!

The cost is &65 each, which is NOT bad because it's a GREAT experience! There was a 76 year old man zipping in front of us! This zip is great, but NOT for the faint of heart! :) I believe they offer it year round, it was about 23 degrees that day up on the top and the wind chill was COLD, wear gloves, and layer to protect yourself!
