Lion Sands Ivory Lodge

The secluded lodge villas were overlooking the river with the Kruger National Park on the other side where we could see lions waiting for buffaloes coming to drink water. We spend 4 most memorable days and nights at this place. Food, service, quality of staff, and off course the two safari trips each lasting about 3 hours provided amazing and close up (almost in touching distance) to lion prides, buffaloes, elephants, wildebeest, hyenas, African rock pythons, leopard, Kudu, impala (various different kinds), zebras, giraffes, etc. Safari staff and out butler were amazing.

Room Tip: All the lodges had excellent views.

This has been a long time coming. But we can never forget the lovely time we had at Sabi Sands Ivory lodge at Kruger National Park almost a year ago September 13, 2012. The accomodation is terrific, our room was like a mini-villa that comes with a butler who takes care of you from breakfast to dinner and more. The room has a separate living room with fireplace, a small veranda where you can just lounge and relax after the drives and watch animals go by with drinks on hand that are provided in the room . Our bedroom was big and luxuriious with exceptionally large bathrooms, tub and shower and an outside shower where curious monkeys appear at the sound of trickling water. It also has its personal negative edge/infinity pool where you can enjoy a nice relaxing dip .

All the staff are wonderful, friendly, very accommodating and provided us with superb service and really made you feel at home so much so you just want to stay longer. Robyn, thank you and extend our thanks to the many outstanding staff of Ivory Lodge.

The food is great and the dining area is a lovely place to eat and visit with new found friends.

The safari drives were amazing, Thanks to our Guide and Tracker we did get the chance to see the big 5 specially the elusive leopard and many other beautiful animals which was very rewarding. We wish we could stay more and we're sad to leave but we made a promise to come back again someday hopefully soon.

All of these comes with a price but it is all worth it.

An experience to never forget! Ivory lodge staff, location, accommodation and food was top notch from start to finish. The welcome from Robyn and Johannes through to our first game drive with Landon and Eddie everything was already thought of or indeed organised and with such a friendly relaxed feel. We had a superb time and absolutely loved the game drives and sights we saw with Landon- wildlife was amazing! Our butler, Reineck was a gem and looked after us like family. I cannot thank the team enough - it was a dream. Special things included a night in the Kingston tree house, dinner in our room, watching elephants and buffalo from our deck and the outside shower! Trip of a life time.

My husband and I have been lucky enough to stay in Fin Foot, Ivory Lodge on two occasions. We initially went for my 40th bday but as soon as we arrived home in the UK we rebooked to go back. That in itself should indicate just how fantastic this place is. The food, the accommodation, the service, the staff and the game drives are all superb. We had awesome trackers and rangers who went to every effort to ensure we saw as many animals as possible. The only bad thing about this place is leaving and returning back to reality.

Room Tip: Keep patio doors shut to avoid snakes and insects entering room

My husband and I have just returned from here, where we spent part of our Honeymoon. We had 4 nights in the lodge called 'Fin Foot' last week, and from the moment we arrived we were not only made to feel so welcome but were looked after so incredibly well it was so sad to say goodbye to everybody. Everything here is simply 'perfect'. From the wonderful and welcoming staff (thanks Aubrey, Lindawe, Robyn and Janine), thoughtful menus, divine food (thanks Scott and Lorraine), extremely knowledgeable Tracker and Ranger (thanks Eddie & Landon) we spent time with to all the others as well who make this place so special. I even had a massage at teh Spa and that was excellent! Without a shadow of a doubt it has been the best experience we had – and we had one night in the Chalkley Treehouse, which was out of this world. To see the stars, satellites and ¾ Moon traverse across the sky throughout the night whilst hearing the magical sounds of nature around us is something we’ll cherish forever. And, last but not least, we were so lucky to have 8 amazing game drives where we managed to see everything and more we wished to see. So much thought goes into every aspect of your stay here that it’s easy to feel you’re part of the Lion Sands family. We miss all of you so much, and cannot wait to sort out a date for our return trip – Lion Sands has truly captured our hearts!

Room Tip: We stayed in 'Fin Foot' but all 6 lodges here are the same with excellent views over the Sab...

We stayed at Ivory Lodge between December 6-11, 2012

During our stay we discovered a snake in our room one afternoon. We telephoned the office and eventually someone came and looked at it. All the while we were waiting, we tried to keep an eye on it so we know where it is when the staff came to remove it. After a look, the person decided he should go and get someone else to catch it as it may be poisonous. He left and we watched the snake. After a bit he returned with another person. They asked us if we have anything to catch it with as they did not want to touch it with their hands. We told them we do not have anything to catch snakes so they used the towels in the room.

A couple of days later, we returned to the room after dinner and discovered that there were two bats in the room. We called the office. Two gentlemen showed up and caught one. We told them there was another one in the room. But they said that we were mistaken and that there is only one. They also said that they will come back if there really are two bats. Shortly after they left the second bat started to fly around the room and bashing into walls, mosquito netting etc. We called the office. The phone was not working.

When we checked in, we were told that we should not leave our rooms without escort as it is dangerous. We were also told that if we needed assistance and the phone was not working because of a power failure we should blow on the whistle for help. There was no power failure but we could not get the phone to work. We went outside and blew the whistle. We blew that whistle for almost an hour and no one came.

We decided to risk the danger and walk to the office to see if we can find some help. There was no one at the office. We walked on to the restaurant and there was no one at the restaurant. He encountered no one the entire way to and fro our room. We blew the whistle further and eventually gave up.

As we did not want to catch rabies from a clearly very frightened bat, we decided that we should be okay if we stayed under the bed covers which were reasonably thick. Shortly after we did that the power failed and the air conditioning stopped. It was a choice between possible rabies or heat stroke. The air conditioning did not come on again till the morning.

In the morning, we asked why the back up generator did not supply power when the power fails. We were told that the hotel do not restore power using the back up generator till the morning if the power goes out after 11 pm or thereabouts. That explained the other very hot nights we endured earlier when the power failed after midnight.

We understand that we are in the midst of wildlife. But if the guests are subjected to dangers of poison and rabies, I think potential guests should be warned. You should also be aware before you book that if you should have any emergencies (a fall, a heart attack, an intruder…) after 10.30 pm you can count on absolutely no assistance – and there may be no air conditioning and no lights to boot. Even if you have no problems but a fellow guest has a problem, you can count on hours of whistling keeping you awake.

After we returned from our travels of 2 months, we emailed the above incidents to the hotel management. They ignored us. We leave you to imagine what we think of this hotel.

Dear Freida K, No excuse for taking months to respond, my sincere apologies! If you do have the email you sent to Management I would great appreciate it if you could foward it to myself at Robert@more.co.za although my slow response and action to your review is going to make it difficult to remedy. I accept we got this very wrong in situ and in response time! I can tell you that the operations of Lion Sands has recently gone through some wonderful changes lead by the appointment of a new General Manager in Ronnie Borragiero, a man who I have known almost all my life and understands the guest centric culture of Lion Sands. The family of staff are here to give guests a life changing moment, a memory which will be with them forever, all on the backdrop of a world class professionally run luxury safari lodge operation. If you ever revisit South Africa please reach out to myself and we will get you back to ensure we correct the tarnished memory of your time with us. Travel safely. Robert.

Attention to detail and friendliness of staff, not to mention the sighting of an amazing array of wildlife puts this vacation spot as one of my all time favorites. Every day was a different adventure on the safari drives. Every spot chosen for morning coffee and afternoon cocktails while on the game drives had spectacular scenery. The food at the resort was also amazing and they offered a variety of choices to please everyone's palates!

Room Tip: There are only limited rooms at this resort and all are spectacularly the same!
