Magical

Review of Chitwa Chitwa
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Aug 6, 2013
We were part of a large group of nine, family and friends who stayed at Chitwa Chitwa in July. We have been to the Sabi sands area before and loved it each time but this was truly fantastic. The setting is amazing, to share breakfast with hippos and watch animals come to the waterhole during the day is unique. All this wildlife is on view from your private balcony. The rooms are individual and stunning. Everyone at Chitwa Chitwa, hosts Claudia and Leon, ranger and guides Rexon and Andreas, chef July and his team, food/bar manager Victory and her crew and the housekeeping staff all ensure that this is a trip to remember. Every morning there were blankets and hot water bottles in the jeep and every evening an african cocktail to welcome us back. Our large table was set up in a different location for dinner every night and the food was wonderful and plentiful. But the best part was the most incredible game drives, never knowing what is around the corner or up a tree. We were off road and moving with the animals or quietly sitting watching them playing or feasting....magical.

As part a trip with Kanyezi African Safari Company, I had the pleasure of staying five days with Chitwa Chitwa Lodge in the Sabi Sands game reserve. Having read the other reviews, all I can say is "ditto" to the praises heaped on this lodge. I took this trip solo, not knowing anyone and feeling like I had discovered a new family! My accommodations were purely luxurious! The king bed, with gauze drapes was mounted on a platform, the fireplace was kept with burning logs, one wall was paneled glass doors that opened, completely exposing the sitting patio and dipping pool. Every evening, an armed guard came to escort me to our outside dinner, because wild animals were known to roam the premises at night. In the afternoon, I could watch elephants, zebra, impala and other animals drink at the lake in front of my private patio. There was always someone to take care of any need. Don't be uneasy about going alone, you'll be well taken care of.

Room tip: My accommodations were closest to the dining area and I could always hear the drums calling for dinner. I only saw two other places and they were lovely.

We booked our South African safari through Kanyezi Africa Safari company and this included five nights at the Chitwa Chitwa lodge in the Sabi Sands game reserve. The excellent service started on our arrival to the lodge with the greeting from the staff and the management team. Claudia and Leon (the general managers) would meet our game safari each evening with a surprise African cocktail. We had lunch everyday on our deck overlooking the lake and the hippos, impala and waterbuck would keep us entertained. We also arranged for a private dinner in our lodge by the fireplace to celebrate our anniversary and every request was met with 5 star service. From the breakfast with cappuccino's to the afternoon tea with excellent desserts all aspects of the food was wonderful. The only improvement is that the menu repeats itself after four days (I guess most visitors only stay three days) and the private plunge pool is not heated in the winter. We loved our stay at Chitwa Chitwa!

Room tip: The rooms are not in order - i.e. the pattern is not room 1, room 2, etc. The rooms to the right of the main deck/ restaurant are closer to the lake and the rhino activity.

This private game lodge is so good that one runs out of superlatives when describing the setting, the facilities, the accommodation, the dining, the game drives and the staff and management. Chitwa sets the benchmark of excellence which few others can hope to achieve. Chitwa Chitwa definitely needs to be included in your bucket list!

Our recent 3 nights at Chitwa Chitwa were magical. From the time we arrived till the moment we left, our every need was taken care of with service that exceeded all expectations. Great attention to detail were given to every aspect of our stay, from the rooms, to the game drives and not forgetting the food. Our room was spacious, tastefully fitted and had a private deck. Each dinner setting was different and we enjoyed the breathtaking décor, both indoors and outdoors.

Gratitude to the managers, Claudia, Leon and Stefan for their warmth and hospitality. We truly appreciated them going out of their way to accommodate us for our last morning game drive and making special arrangements for us to catch our flight that same morning! We saw the Big 5 and many more games, thanks to Hali, our very knowledgeable and entertaining ranger with an uncanny ability to spot and identify the smallest game from a distance. The additional insights Hali provided on the wildlife and plants added to the excitement of each sighting.

We highly recommend Chitwa Chitwa to those seeking a luxurious safari holiday. We found it very, very hard to say goodbye.

Our family and friends (9 in total including a10 and 13 year old and a 70+ grandmother) spent the most wonderful 4 night stay at Chitwa none of us wanted it to end. Our guide Rexon and tracker Andraus ( sorry boys if wrong spelling ) were fantastic so good at getting us in the right place every day to see the best animals. Rexon was so passionate about conservation, his family and village. Our host Leon and Claudia were great very helpful and informative. They were there to greet us morning, noon and night. Victory and all the staff were fantastic excellent food and service. We stayed in Chitwa House which was beautiful comfortable and with a fantastic view. I would go back tomorrow.
