Arathusa Safari Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 11, 2010

Of all the lodges we stayed at Arathusa was my least favorite. The room was OK but not terribly private. The main building was absolutely superb it had a good bar area for pre dinner drinks, but it lacked atmosphere. Food was OK but not overly generous in serving sizes. Our tracker was very informative he certainly knew his stuff. The vehicles were packed to the maximum with people including a person in the front seat. Overall there was something missing, I felt this lodge was more about them making money for the least possible outlay. With regards to wildlife it was excellent but having the vehicles stuffed to the max make it a little uncomfortable. We saw lots of rhino, elephants, cheetah, lions a leopard. That part I wouldn't criticise.

The stay at Arathusa was the best holiday of my life.
We saw the big 5 up close and personal within the first 3 days.
We stayed for 5 nights, which is a bit of a luxury. 3 is enough, 4 is even better but 5 nights was unnecessary as we had seend everything we wanted to see by then.
Of course, if we hadn't seend everything, then the 5th night would have been important to us.
I was amazed at how close we got to the wild animals and how exposed we were to them.
We ate too much food but it was very nice.
Although we stayed in a luxury room, I would reccomend a standard room.
The luxury rooms are a long walk and at night you need an escort to look for wild animals. The standard rooms are within the compound overlooking the lagoon.
The stay at Arathusa was brilliant and I will remember it for the rest of my life.

My wife, teenage son and I stayed at Arathusa during a break from our World Cup games. Three days and six game drives later the lodge proved simply fantastic. The setting, rooms, service, food, wine were all of the highest quality. Each game drive was a never to be forgotten adventure. Our tracker and guide made sure of this, not only steering us within a stone's throw of the Big Five, but serving loads of facts and information. When you think of a luxury Safari think Arathusa. It was a blast! Memories and stories to pass on to generations.

Arathusa lodge was amazing and the location, and price, couldn't be better. The staff was nice, game drives amazing, rooms adorable, and overall a perfect experience for us. We wished we could have stayed longer.

The cottages were very clean, spacious, the beds luxurious, two showers (one outside and one inside), a large bath, and beautiful views over the watering hole where we watched animals drink and graze during the day.

The food was good and lots to choose from for every meal. In fact, there probably won't be a moment where you go hungry at this lodge.... Also there was a nice selection of wine to go with dinner and lunches.

The game drives were just incredible. We saw all big five animals within two game drives and they put you incredibly within yards of the animals. It feels like national geographic at its best. We saw leopards eating an impala out of a tree while a hyena waited on the bottom for anything to drop. We saw lions eatings a giraffe, then another pride eating a water buffalo. We saw a hippo, rhinos, elephants and lots of prey animals as well. To top of the experience you relax and have a small snack and drink during the middle of your drive.

We would stay here again without hesitation!

My husband and I stayed at Arathusa as part of our honeymoon in late May-early June 2010. After doing an extensive search for lodges that provided both luxury and value, we settled on Arathusa and were never disappointed. We stayed in a luxury chalet and had our own living area, bedroom, indoor/outdoor showers, porch and plunge pool. It was totally private, beautiful, and gave us some very good game viewing as we saw wildebeest, monkeys and all sorts of other animals frolicking and eating right in front of our chalet. The game drives with Brendan & Roy were also great. They were friendly, informative and really went out of their way to make sure each person in the car got to see the Big Five and more. They were also in constant communication with other cars to advise of sightings and to ensure we weren't missing any animal activity. Food at this lodge was both excellent and plentiful, and even though you have to pay for drinks, the prices were very reasonable. We can't list one complaint and are recommending this lodge to friends and family looking for a safari experience in South Africa. We'd also love to get back - our three days went by in a blur!

Arathusa was the last stop of our 14-day safari in Southern Africa. It was the least posh of the lodges we had stayed in during our trip (and also the cheapest, although not by much considering the discount our agent go2africa.com had gotten us from Desert&Delta for the Botswana part of our trip). the food was ok, but not great. The game vehicles were more packed then elsewhere (4 other lodges), with 10 people in each 4WD car compared to 4-6 in the other lodges. So it felt more commercial. However, the lodge was still beautiful, overlooking a large pond with common game, like hogs, waterbucks, impalas, etc. around most of the time to drink and hang around. Also many birds. The rooms were also spacey and luxurious. Drinks and laundry were extra but not too expensive.

This place excelled in cats. Although we missed the lions (they returned after we had left), we saw plenty of leopards in predator action (actually we saw leopard up-close on every ride), and hyenas stealing a kill from a leopard and devouring it right by our vehicle. We observed two beautiful cheetahs for a long time, a mom and a cub, posing for us and resting. It was priceless.

And rhinos, the rhinos. This was the place for rhinos. In groups of up to 8, with very interesting interaction and behaviour. I'll never forget. for me rhionos, along with leopards and cheetahs, were the top highlights in Arathusa. Common game and elephants were rarer, interestingly. Probably just luck.

Would I go back to Arathusa? Yes. But I would not just go there because game concentration and distribution were different everywhere. In some places, we saw lots of elephants, in others cats, yet others very unique baboon behaviour, etc.

My adult daughter and I stayed at Arathusa for 3 nights. It was thoroughly enjoyable and restful. The accommodation was very nice and the facilities excellent. Our ranger, Ryan, was truly amazing and we saw so many animals on every drive. Two amazing experiences stand out in our memories - one was seeing 2 leopards mating right next to our vehicle as though we weren't there. The other was the day that herds of elephants came to the waterhole directly below Arathusa - so many elephants it was astounding. The photo opportunities at Arathusa are endless.
