We went early to check this place out and we were glad we did. We saw birds, ducks and hawks in a beautiful landscape and got some nice pictures. Later that day there was a dust storm that blew into Roswell so "looking" at anything was hard to do. Only about 7 miles away from city. Worth the trip!

It's a nature preserve with a lot of open land and water. To really see any fowl you'll need binoculars or will need to hike all the way down to the water, often through some tall grasses. Unless you're a real bird watcher there may not be much to excite you. The roads are unpaved and very dusty so don't wash the car right before you go! We would rather have spent the time at bitterlakes.

After seeing an introductory film at the visitor center, we drove around the loop road, where we saw unbelievable numbers of dragon flies, sandhill cranes (arriving at dusk), snow geese, and red-winged blackbirds. Spectacular!

We arrived too late to go into the visitor center, which closes at 5pm, but we drove around the wetlands. There were plenty of birds and wildlife to see. It's a nice drive!

Not a lot to see on the 6-mile drive but the visitor center is great. Watch the educational movie if you have time and relax out on the deck. Watch for snakes.
