Our family of 4 stayed at Alpine Lodge the week of December 20, right after the kids got out of school. The week before Christmas is not crowded at Red River. The Alpine Lodge is a little Bavarian lodge out of a story book. The pictures on their website do not come close to capturing its appeal; and with the exception of the poor-quality bouncy beds, it exceeded all of our expectations. It sits right at the base of the ski area, and fronts to the quaint main street of Red River, which at this time of the year sparkles with Christmas lights and snow, especially enchanting as you round the last mountain curve and take your first view of Red River arriving after dark on your first night. We had a 2 bedroom, 2 bath unit with a kitchen, and could park right out front of unit, up next to the gingerbread front porch. There is a children's playground, a fire pit with rough-hewn swings that you can sit around and watch the big fire every night, which also fronts the babbling river that runs through the property and under a covered gingerbread bridge leading to the ski area, arcade, bar, italian restaurant (Capos), etc. All this, AND the snow capped mountains are the 360 degree view backdrop, and everything around the lodge and the town covered in several feet of gorgeous white snow. Cathy at the front desk was very attentive and friendly. You can walk to everything from the Alpine (1-2 minute walk): (1) We walked to a great breakfast at T-Bucks Hole Thing, where the service was great; (2) walked across the street to for the best dinner of the trip, at a restaurant call Timbers; (3) walked to the grocery store just up the street (prices are high, shop at home before you come if you can); (4) walked to the snow mobile shop (Fast Eddie's, which fronts the Alpine Lodge - ask for Montana to be your guide, what a blast and worth every penny for the 2 & 1/2 hour trip); (5) walked right up the hill to the Red River Ski Area; (6) the Play Place arcade; and (6) the souvenir shops and ski shops. We drove 4 blocks to the "Lodge" for dinner; don't waste your time on that place ($20 t-bone steak was thin and chewy, bread was hard; the special chicken and dumplings had 2 small pieces of chicken but 4 pieces of gristle -- just go to Timbers or somewhere else for a burger! We will come back again next year -- can't beat the Alpine for location, location, location!
