My family has been staying at Tall Pines resort for over 50 years. Let me say this first: if you want to be in a picturesque natural setting, this place is for you. It is on the edge of town tucked deep with beautiful fir, spruce, and aspen trees with the Red River flowing through the entire resort. The huge lake is stocked with large rainbow trout perfect for fly or reel fishing.

The cabins are beautiful, clean, and comfortable, and a good size for a couple or a large family. Not elegant - no granite or porcelain tile, but an authentic mountain cabin. The owners were great!

We wouldn't stay anywhere else!

The location of the property was nice... nestled in a wooded area a couple miles south of Red River proper, it was more isolated than most accommodations in the area. Providing more of an "away from it all" experience while still being close enough to take in all that Red River has to offer. The pond was also nice and the fishing was decent after it was stocked on Monday. However, the $35 per person you had to pay for a 3 day fishing permit (even for kids) was outrageous. The cabins and furnishings were in desperate need of updating and we left windows open because we were concerned about the old oven and that the gas heater did not seem to be properly vented...fumes were pretty strong. Another major complaint was the charcoal grill advertised on their website. The one at our cabin was an old gas grill that had gas lines disconnected, the wheels broken off, and grill wired on in such a way that the lid would not even shut. This was one of the better grills...looks like they went dumpster diving when they need to replace a grill. For the prices they charge ($145 for our 2 br cabin) they should be able to afford decent grills....especially since they do not allow campfires. The roads were in pretty rough shape and there were only a few short trails for hiking...most ended at the pond, others went nowhere. Service was non-existent, just stayed in the office and took your money. They do not offer any maid service which I don't mind for these type of accommodations. But they also ask you to clean the cabin before you leave...for the price cleaning should definitely be included. The "resort" has potential but it needs work. It looks like it may have been really nice at one time...but is definitely in decline. I believe the appropriate price range for these cabins should be in the $75-$90 range rather than the $125-$150 they are asking. It wasn't a bad place to stay but was way overpriced for what you got. My family did have a fun vacation but were definitely a little disappointed with Tall Pines. Don't plan to return unless updates are made.
