We left Red River at daylight in mid-August. We did not hike to Wheeler Peak from Taos. It was a long day but well worth it. The hardest part of the hike was from above Horseshoe Lake as it is very rocky with large boulders to climb. Once past this rocky area it seems like the air is thin. The views at the peak are amazing! It took us 13 hrs to make the trip. Well worth it but oh did my feet know that we had climbed so many rocks. We highly recommend this hike. Next time we will try it from Taos. We aren't kids. Both over 50 when we bagged this peak. Ready to go!
