Good food in an out of the way place, You have to get off the interstate to enjoy this landmark restaurant, but it is well worth it.

Pappas' reminded me of the restaurants my parents used to take me to when we "dined out" back in the 50's, so it should come as no surprise to find this family owned restaurant has been in business since well before then, providing good food and friendly service since folks tooled through town on Route 66. New Mexico.org has a nice writeup about the restaurant and its history on the culinary treasures section of its website:

Food and atmosphere is excellent. The owner has a unique knowledge of the history of Raton. He has authored a history of Raton which he has on sale.

Pappas' Sweet Shop is a long time staple in Raton. The founder immigrated from Greece and opened a candy shop that expanded and eventually changed into the restaurant that it is today, which is still owned and operated by the Pappas family. The cover of the menu has the entire story and much of the decor is made up of items that showcase that story. There really isn't anything off the menu that you could order that would be bad, and they have options to cover every taste from lunch to dinner options. They often have holiday buffets, including Mother's Day; and are starting to carry some homemade candy again. The owners often personally check with guests while they are restaurant. Since it is not far from the interstate and close to most of the lodging in town, it shouldn't be missed if you are in Raton.
