“Just a nice ride”
Reviewed October 24, 2011

This was a pleasant ride on my motorcycle, but nothing special. The historic coal mining town was interesting only because it paralled my own expereinc growing up in a company town.

“Site of abandoned coal mines”
Reviewed September 28, 2011

The state park lies on the old Sugarite (pronounced Sugar-eet) Coal Mines and the foundations of much of the old mining town can still be seen. However, if you are hiking to the top to see the coal mines (which the signs seem to indicate is possible), you will be disappointed. The mines are caved in and there's nothing to see but signs pointing to where the entrances used to be. One day this might be restored into an amazing recreation of a turn-of-the-20th-Century mining camp. As a history guy, I thought it was pretty cool. My wife... not so much.

“A HIDDEN GEM”
Reviewed July 20, 2011

If you are near or going through Raton, NM and do not visit this park at least for an hour or so, you are depriving yourself of a real pleasure. Beautiful, wonderful history, wildlife, lakes, fishing, hiking, camping. Beautiful canyon!! This is only 6 miles NE of Raton. At least spend the time to drive through this wonderful park.

“Highly Ranked Small State Park in the Nation”
Reviewed April 7, 2009

This place lives up to its reputation! Hit the park in mid summer and you will be delighted by the green covered mountains, fresh air breazing through the tree's, beautiful clean lakes, great fishing and hiking, and of course great camping spots for tents and RV's alike! The nightly rates arent bad, the fishing and scenery are top notch! Take a day to bum around town, take a walking tour, eat at some of the fine restaurants, play a round of golf. You will love this place!
