The manager at our hotel in Taos recommended we eat at Ranchos Plaza Grill, and it was excellent. We had the carne avada in enchiladas with their homemade red chile sauce, and we had tostadas made from fresh corn tortillas. Lovely sopapillas. The restaurant sits in front of the famous St. Francis de Asis church. The total for our dinner for two came to only $22!! And we were stuffed. If you get a chance try this restaurant.

This small restaurant is located in a centuries-old authentic adobe hacienda located next to famous San Francisco de Assis Church. The town is on the south-western outskirts of Taos. We would not have found it except it was recommended to us by the lady at the motel where we stayed. The decor is pretty plain, but the restaurant staff is courteous and efficient.
We had their toastados and salsa as an appetizer. Their salsa was excellent. We both ordered their 4-item combination plate. Each plate had a cheese enchilada, a tamale, beef taco, and a chile relleno. All of the food items were excellent and very filling. The taco used pulled beef instead of ground beef and was particularly good. Being Texans, we don’t quite get the New Mexico concept of drowning Mexican food in red or green sauce as that obscures the flavors of the food rather than enhancing it. We always get our sauce on the side and either use it sparingly or not at all. We were so full from the tostados and entrée that we had to bypass the dessert.

We stopped by the Ranchos Plaza Grill on a lark after Sunday Mass at the San Francisco de Asis Church and absolutely loved the food. Yes, it is a family place, and gets a little overwhelmed, but the locals swear by it---and for good reason. Their red chili sauce is superb, and the sopapillas (complimentary with every full meal) are a guilty pleasure. It is the real deal.

We went here once and it could have been an off day. Seems to be a family run business. The owner is friendly and professional. The kids helping out are less so. Several times we heard complaints about the customers. It's hard to work with family! I had the bean and cheese burrito which was very good. The fry bread was good. My friend was not so lucky with her vegetable and blue corn dish. The blue corn tortilla was good but not the filling. The raspberry iced tea is not tea but in fact something more like watered down kool aid. The water has a strange flavor that must take time to get used to. But the ice was dirty and I fished several things out of my drink. In hindsight I should have not drank anything there. Anyway the food made us have to go to the bathroom pronto and unfortunately the bathroom was very dirty from previous guests (no toilet seat covers either) and also felt like it was placed in the middle of the dining room offering very little privacy. The location is great. You're right next to the historic church. The menu had a lot of great sounding authentic food. But I would not go back if I'm ever in the area again.
