“Decent Food But Not Great”
Reviewed September 5, 2010

We stopped at La Posta on our way home from the New Mexico Harvest Wine Fest. My husband had good memories of the restaurant. Since it was dinner hour on a Saturday on a holiday weekend, the restaurant was busy, & we were told the wait would be about 45 minutes. It ended up being closer to 1.25 hours. The waiting area has lots of (not very comfortable) seating, several aquariums, and some tropical birds. For our dinner we split the La Posta Granda combo plate, which included dessert. Our server was very good, appropriately attentive. The food was good, but nothing special. We were in a room that had two large parties of more than a dozen people, so it was crowded, and the waitresses had a difficult time getting around because of that. The restaurant has been around for a long time - since 1939. The building was one of the original stops on the Butterfield Stage Coach line, so the place has an interesting history. Would we go back again? Maybe, but not real soon.

“Great ambience”
Reviewed August 22, 2010

This Mexican restaurant is right in the middle of Mesilla old town, on the edge of Las Cruces. The restaurant is large and sprawling, decorated with lots of murals, indoor fountains and aquaria and aviaries with various exotic birds. It serves good quality Mexican fare at reasonable prices, has excellent wait staff and a good atmosphere. We had a 20 minute wait to get seated on a Friday night because of its popularity (tourists and locals alike)

“So good! Fun place”
Reviewed August 12, 2010

I really enjoyed this place. The atmosphere is fun and festive and I loved the red (round) cheese enchilada with the egg on top. YUM! Definitely add the egg, it was the perfect touch. The food is a bit spicy but of course, you're in New Mexico! This would be my #1 restaurant choice if going back. In fact, I can't wait to go back and try some of their other dishes.

“Great atmosphere & history, good food if you know what to order”
Reviewed June 6, 2010

I live walking distance to Mesilla square, so I know the restaurants in this area. La Posta is Mesilla's main "touristy" restaurant. The building is historic and so is the restaurant. The atmosphere is very good; there are pricy, touristy shops in the building lobby, along with tropical birds and fish to look at. The decor is a somewhat overdone version of classic Mexican; you know, ceramic parakeets hanging from the ceiling and big paper flowers everywhere and what not. It comes across better than I can describe it. The food is hit and miss; I recommend their sour cream enchiladas, or any of the house special combo plates. Their rellenos and tacos are unexciting. They have a huge tequilla menu, and can make a mean margarita. I like their "horny rita." The house 'rita is weak and too sweet, in my opinion. If you're visiting Mesilla, especially with a large group or with children, stop and eat here at least once. It's worth it for the fun decor, and the food isn't bad. If you're looking for a more romantic experience or really great food, head over to the Double Eagle/Peppers cafe. If you want cheaper and better food without the atmosphere, go to El Comedor or Andele.

“Good historic location on charming plaza, but food is disappointly so-so”
Reviewed June 5, 2010

La Posta is right on the enchanting, Mesilla plaza. The building is historic. There are exotic birds in giant cages at the entrance which was rather sad. The food is dissappointly so-so.
