“Good Hotel for Celebrating a Wedding Anniversary”
Reviewed September 6, 2010

We booked this hotel in order to celebrate our 47th wedding anniversary. The location was perfect. We requested a room with a balcony. It overlooked the lake and the mountains. We like to walk and there was a trail around part of the lake. The staff was very courteous and friendly and our room very large and clean. The beds were comfortable. Since the hotel was only a few miles from Ruidoso, we drove into town to eat our meals. We did eat one meal at Wendell's restaurant at the hotel, and it was fine. What we liked best about the hotel was its location. The scenery was gorgeous and we had a very relaxing time. On the down side, our room could do with a little updating. Someone had gotten the sheer curtains caught in the balcony door and they were ripped at the top. Also someone had put about four black marks on the curtain, possibly with a marks a lot pen. The carpet in the room had several stains on it and the toilet paper roll in the bathroom kept coming off its wall mounting. I would like to stress, however, that the room was very clean, and these minor complaints are not enough to keep us from returning for another visit. We really enjoyed our v isit here.

The Inn is a beautiful property in a great setting. Unfortunately, however, their customer service is very poor. We made a telephone reservation for a July visit. The hotel did not send an email confirmation. In June we were billed for a night as a "no-show" because the reservations clerk had incorrectly made our reservation for June. While that can happen, when we called to straighten out the error, we were repeatedly told we had to talk to a supervisor who would return our call. No return call ever came, despite our calling on five occasions. With no alternative, we disputed the charge through our credit card issuer. The dispute was resolved in our favor, but the point is that the hotel could have worked with us to resolve the error and retain us as customers. Instead their total lack of customer service has lost us permanently as customers. Use extra care when dealing with this hotel.

I knew a new hotel & casino had been built since our stop eight years ago, when we walked in, smelled the heavy cigarette smoke and dingy surroundings and walked out ten minutes later. All that has changed. The new resort is magnificent, rooms large, airy and well furnished. Ask for "smoke free" and you get it. Casino is small, staff very friendly and food excellent in Wendel's Restaurant. Mountain scenery is outstanding, air cool and fresh, price right. An exceptional retreat from the heat of Texas in August.

We really enjoyed staying at Inn of the Mountain Gods. Clean rooms, beautiful scenery. Short walking trail. We stayed in our room pratically the entire time. We enjoyed the balcony so much.

A couple of things for people to think about....

~There is one high end restaurant at the resort. You need to call ahead & make reservations.

~ There is a buffet. We only ate breakfast at the buffet (early 7am - no lines.) We didn't eat supper @ the buffet. However, we walked by at supper time & there was a long line.

~We only stayed one night, we ordered room service & ate on the balcony to enjoy the view of the lake & mountains.

~ We brought our own adult beverages to enjoy. Liquor stores are expensive in Ruidoso.

The very best thing about Inn of the Mountain Gods is its' setting on the Reservation and the beautiful, uncluttered views that come with. The vista, the golf course and the lake are truly beautiful. The hotel itself, unfortunately has the look of a 1980's shopping mall and does not match the feel of this beautiful country. They were trying for some kind of glitzy casino destination, I guess, and they missed big time. Inside is quite sterile in comparison to ordinarily colorful and warm New Mexico. And, huge problem, the entire facility reeks of stale smoke. Air handling in the shopping mall is poor. As for the casino, it is something to do, but they do not provide drinks on the floor. They have a tiny indoor pool very much like what they have at a Hampton Inn, we passed. We tried Wendell's Restaurant and the breakfast buffet and found both to be good. For entertainment, we went into Ruidoso where we had a great time at the Win, Place or Show Bar and Noisey Waters Winery. We did enjoy a boatride on the Inn's lake and think the hotel property would benefit from some walking/jogging trails as well as landscaping. The outdoors at the Inn is their Ace and I would have appreciated more things to do out in it. With a little work, some creative work outside, some AIR FRESHENING EQUIPMENT(!!) and a whole new approach to a dismal casino... the Inn of the Mountain Gods could be great. As it stands, I would give it a C-. I would not go to the Inn unless you have a deal and are paying no more than $125.00 for a mountainview room with the breakfast buffet and afternoon cocktails included. Anything higher would be too much.

We had a great room overlooking the golf course and lake. Had coffee on balcony each morning before going to breakfast. Great food, served with a view. The staff was very helpful and friendly. They went out of their way to make sure our stay of four nights was a pleasant one.
