“luxury off the beaten track”
Reviewed June 13, 2009

Recently spent 2 nights at the Ranch Magdalena in Magdalena, a small town between the VLA and Soccorro. The owners Lori and Lee were very friendly and hospitable, the room was nicely furnished and comfortable and we felt welcome in the owners living room. The breakfasts were large and wonderful. The scenery around is spectacular, I would recommend the ranch and this part of New Mexico for people who like to experience places off the beaten track.

Stayed 2 nights at the Rancho Magdalena in late April, solo. It is sometimes hard to find good accomodations in sparsely populated western and southwestern NM, so I was ecstatic to find this gem. The place is just excellent.

Highlights...

--Rooms are perfect for 1 or 2 people - not huge, but plenty big enough. Clean, nicely decorated, comfy bed, nice fireplace. Very cozy.
--Common area is a wonderful home
--The best part, really, is the people. The owners (Lori and, I think, Bob) were out of town, but their daughter Jennifer was in charge during my stay, along with her husband Kelly. They were just fantastic, friendly, helpful people.
--The animals are friendly too - 3 very friendly dogs who escort your car in from the road, the donkey named Sara, a couple cats... all friendly.
--Scenery is classic old west
--Breakfasts are exellent
--Location is great, in that, as I noted, its hard to find a nice place to stay if your travels take you to Catron or western Socorro counties. This is the best of the bunch.

I cannot recommend it strongly enough. Had a fantastic time!

This is a gem of a B&B. It is a working ranch and friendly animals will greet you on arrival. (3 dogs, 2 cats, 2 horses and a wonderful donkey named Sara). Oh and then there's Lori who runs the B7B and Lee who is the business brain.
The accomodation is excellent. A good sized bedroom with a gas kiva fireplace, lots of storage space and a good sized en suite bathroom. Lots of towels and reading material.
Outside there are comfy chairs where you can sit in the evening and watch the storms over the distant hills. Sitting here is very pleasant in the morning too.
Lori always has coffee waiting outside your room for you to drink whilst you plan your day. Then its six paces to the main house where she prepares and serves a truly wonderful breakfast. (You won't go hungry here).
The lounge area is available to sit in in the evening and there is a television. We were included in the family group watching one evening and Lori made the most delicious popcorn.
This B&B isn't really in a touristy area of NM but there are things to see and do if you go looking. (Lee can help you with this). The B&B itself is worth a trip and it's one of the few places we would re-visit just because we enjoyed it so much.

  • Liked — The room and amenities. Lori & Lee and those wonderful breakfasts.
  • Disliked — Nothing to dislike.

We rented "The Townehouse" while in Magdalena. The two bedroom, two bath house was so spacious and clean! We enjoyed relaxing on the front porch after our wonderful dinner at the cafe across the street. Web site: http://ranchomagdalena.com/index.html

We loved Rancho Magdalena! The hosts were friendly and knowledgeable about the area. Unlike other places that use the term ranch liberally, this really is a ranch with cats, dogs, chickens, turkeys, goats, horses, donkeys and cows. Even the animals are friendly including my favorite, an overzealous bull named Bully. The rooms each have private entrances off of the main house so you don’t feel like you are invading anyone’s space. The breakfast was fantastic and we were told that the hostess Lori had won many cooking competitions, which I don’t doubt.

My girlfriend and I had the pleasure of staying at Rancho Magdalena for a night recently while on a trip to NM. Lee & Lori are excellent hosts who do a great job of making you feel instantly at home. They're both very knowledgable about the area, and have a great collection of books on local history as well.

The room we stayed in was very nice, with all the comforts of home - great bed, nicely decorated bathroom & an adobe fireplace. Coffee was waiting outside the door when we woke up, and the breakfast Lori prepares is just amazing.

Nothing but the highest recommendation from us. This is a gem of a place that we'll definitely stay at again when we're in the area.

Nothing but the highest recommendation for Rancho Magdalena. Lee and Lori are perfect hosts, helpful, knowledgeable and friendly.

The bed and breakfast is adjacent to the magdalna Airport, a state maintained dirt and shale strip, N29, in reasonable condition. Land, hike, stay the night, great breakfast and back in the air.

We really enjoyed our visit and plan to return.
