Lincoln is most famous for Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County War. There are anywhere from 7 to 9 buildings you can tour as well as a documentary film that talks about how life was back in the Old West. It is run by the state of New Mexico. There are also a few small businesses that sell tourist gifts. The winter is their slower season. Individuals who have an interest in American West history should visit and know that as they walk throughout town they will be walking in the footsteps of people such as Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.

This little town of Lincoln, NM is a museum. Go to the actual museum, watch the video and get a map. There are about ten buildings that you can go into to step back in time and relive the Lincoln County wars and the era of Billy the Kid. In Lincoln, there are several cafes and even an AirBnB that are housed in vintage buildings. I could have spent all day there.

The town of Lincoln was the main reason for our visit to the area, and it was worth the trip. Expect to spend several hours here to really take in everything this well-preserved piece of history has to offer. Lincoln was the stomping grounds for Billy the Kid, John Chisum, Pat Garrett, and others, and the site of the Lincoln County War. All of this and more is presented through the different museums around town, beginning with either the Courthouse or the Visitor's Center, depending on which end of town you start from. It's recommended to start at the visitor's center, where there is plenty of parking (some in the shade) and a film that introduces visitors to the town and its historical importance.

You can drive between buildings but there's really no need, the town is very walkable. Go in and out of the buildings that are open to the public (one ticket gets you into everything, for a nominal fee), and soak in the atmosphere. Stop in the gift shops, restaurants, brewery... enjoy the laid back setting.

Lincoln is a great place for families, the museums have interesting artifacts, the staff is chock full of information about the lives and times of the historical figures you may ask about and the town in general, and there are some kid-friendly activities as well, such as a dress-up area in the visitor's center perfect for photo ops. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and learned quite a bit of history while we were there.

Prices in town are reasonable, and there's a pressed penny machine in the visitor's center. We were amazed at how well preserved everything is. Some buildings that served multiple purposes over the course of time were set up to show that.

We made a special trip to New Mexico to see the town of Lincoln and where the Lincoln County War took place. I have read many books on the subject and wanted to see the historical buildings, land, etc. This was a perfect trip for us, and so very educational. We walked the town, read all the posted information and "Stepped Back In Time". This is a must see for anyone interested in Billy the Kid history.

This is a not-very-expensive stop which is interesting and a must-see for history buffs. The entire town is largely preserved and it is interesting to remember what life was like then and how it bred people like William H. Bonny (Billy the Kid).
