Visited the Lincoln Monument/Town of Lincoln. Incredible for anyone who enjoys old west history, and in particular, the Lincoln County War and Billy the Kid. For 5 bucks you tour through 2 museums, one of them being the last place that Billy the Kid Escaped from after the New Mexico govenor renaged on his deal for a pardon. You will see the actual building, the actual stairway where the shooting took place, bullett holes in the wall, the shackles that Billy the Kid was wearing, all fanatastic pieces of history. The entire town is a museum in itself. You can walk into most buildings which are original, even an art shop that use to be a saloon, complete with original bar. This place is a absolute must see.....

The museum in the old court house is worth seeing, and there are still bullet holes in the wall from Billy The Kid's escape, and markers where the men he shot fell. Worth a walk through the entire town.

I've read a lot about the Lincoln county war protagonists over the years and this brought it all to life. For $5 to see all the notable places where major battles and events took place is the best value for money in anyone's book. All very well preserved and maintained. I am so pleased we were there on 12th Sept 2012 as we had a fantastic day walking around town in the sunshine. The day after it was bucketing down with rain and quite miserable, so it's really a fair weather place to go. One error in the data at the Old Court House stated that Tom Pickett (on of the regulators) died at Stinking Springs (I don’t remember the exact wording). That isn’t exactly correct – only Charlie Bowdre was killed at Stinking Springs in December 1880, and I understand Tom Pickett went on to live to ripe old age dying in 1934. I've sent a mail to the national monument but have yet to hear back.

If you're a Wild West fan like me, check it out. Find out all about the Lincoln County War/Billy the Kid. There are 6 museums in the restored western town...see all for $5 total. See the actual room where Billy made the most famous escape in Western History, killing Deputies Bell and Olinger in the process. I loved the correspondence on display between then Governor Lew Wallace (author of Ben Hur) and Billy, discussing his surrender. People think of Billy as a cold-blooded killer only...he was, but also a bi-lingual, intelligent and a well written young man. Plus, it's a beautiful drive to get there.

The monument is a series of about 6 buildings with artifacts and exhibits telling the story of Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County War. The cost is only $5.00. The staff is friendly and helpful. You may be surprised at what really happened. Highly recommended.
