“Historical Hotel”
Reviewed March 29, 2010

Stayed at this hotel with my daughter. It is a great place with a lot of history behind it. I a must stay for the history buff. There is not much to do in Las Vegas, NM, so stay here if you are looking for history. The rooms are all non-smoking, but as with all such places the smokers will still smoke and your room and towels will smell of smoke. The restaurant was good. There is also a bar, and it will provide some noise during the early evening. Parking is on the street in a not-so-nice part of town.

first off if your traveling to Las Vegas NM you obviously are a History lover. Las Vegas is known for some very infamous outlaws like Billy the Kid and Doc Holiday. the ultimate place to experience this history is at the PLAZA HOTEL (Established in 1881) The Plaza Hotel has a feeling of being in the old west which is what you come to New Mexico for! Also, Have you seen the movie No Country for Old Men? Part of it was filmed at this Hotel. My experience with this hotel was first greeted with a friendly staff. Everyone from the cleaning staff to the general manager were polite and helped me with needs. PS Santiago at the front desk will help you with any issue you have. The Plaza Hotel has a very historic bar which is a great place to get a drink and listen to live music while the Landmark Grill has delicious food and an excellent chef. During my experience with the hotel I rented their ballroom to host a party in which 100 people attended. Troy and Melissa (Directors of Sales) will make your wedding, party or whatever PERFECT. My party was Mardi Gras themed and it looked like it should have been at the Palms in Las Vegas, NV it was that good. The events staff really know what they are doing. The Ballroom has a wonderful color scheme that represents a historic building but can easily be manipulated to fit any themed party. The speaker system is one of the best while the projector system can be used to create a colorful light show just above the dance floor. Also, when you rent the ballroom the plaza will cut and serve any cake, provide tables with table clothes, and candles inside Hurricane Vases. (The candles really make a difference in the beauty of the room) The Chandeliers on the sealing look beautiful and the light that is created by them can be altered to any way you want them which creates the perfect atmosphere. Lastly, the Honeymoon Suit is magnificent and the perfect way to end the night.

To conclude my review of the hotel I would like to say that it succeeds in both quality and comfort. The rooms are very well priced and it is an superb area of the Historic District. IF YOU DO NOT RENT THIS HOTEL YOU ARE MISSING AN EXPERIENCE!!!!!!! I am the most picky person you will ever encounter, I can and will criticize anything but my experience with the PLAZA has left me feeling really good.

I was a bit worried when I read the one review from the disappointed traveler saying the rooms in the "new" section were not historic and were like the Holiday Inn Express. Thankfully, that was not OUR experience of the new section! The room was plenty large, high ceilings, with antique furnishings. That which wasn't antique (sink fixtures and the like) was antique "style."

As for service, well, this is New Mexico. Things are a little different here and move a little slower though all the staff members were friendly and helpful. That said, my sweetie didn't get his coffee until just before the meal came and was just a tad grumpy about it. The breakfast, however, (free with your stay) was quite yummy—bacon, eggs (cooked how you want them), potatoes, fruit, and toast or biscuit, and coffee.

We stayed for $69.00 a night, which I thought was quite a bargain considering the charm, free breakfast, nice room, decent bed, the amenities (free Wi-Fi, hair dryer, little coffee maker in the room, toiletries, iron and ironing board, flat panel TV) etc.

If you love historic—and I do—this place is a visual treat from top to bottom.

Our birding group stays at this hotel every few years on our way through NM to other locations. Trip members are usually impressed and pleased to stay in such a well-kept historic hotel. Rooms are nicely antiquely appointed and comfortable, staff was helpful, and the ease of making, confirming, and changing group reservations was outstanding. On the night of our arrival, there were multiple events happening throughout the Plaza area. A few folks that ate in the restaurant felt the waitstaff was overwhelmed thus service was not up to par and were not impressed with the food they were served (felt it was adequate and affordable, but were hoping for better), but also said breakfast the next morning exceeded their expectations and staff showed exceptional service. Everyone also noticed the sound of the band could be heard throughout the hotel halls, but with the exception of one room near the reception all, everyone said once they closed their door it was quite. We'll continue to use and recommend this hotel as a treat on our way through the area!

We travel often to Las Vegas, NM as we are planning on moving there in a year or two. That said, we always stay at the Plaza Hotel. We visit twice a year and this time stayed 12 days.

If you like small towns, historic buildings, western feel, beautiful scenery, great weather, and good people, then this is the place, and what better place to see all that than from a historic hotel built in 1882. Yes it has creaky floors and the furniture is antique, not old. They have added the building next door, which is also on the historic building list and have kept the look and feel of the main building, but with all new facilities, carpets etc. However, they kept the creaky floors.

We stayed this time in the new section, during a Halloween dance, televised sports games of the local schools, and conference meetings, and never was bothered by any noise. And, I am a light sleeper.

There seems to be something going on every other night during the week and weekends. Local bands and traveling musicians can be found in the bar as I stated above. The hotel hosts parties such as Halloween night costume contest and dance, where some interesting locals showed up. Just sitting in the lobby and watching can be enjoyable.

The Landmark Grill restaurant has become an excellent place to eat. Whether you get the free Plaza breakfast, or one of their many monthly theme dinners, you can expect a taste-bud delight. We lucked out and had an Oktoberfest German dinner when we first arrived and got to sample their "Comfort Food" November menu for the rest of our stay. The service and food was just as good whether we were one of the few or the place was packed with guests.

We cannot say more about the fine folks we met during our stay. From Ann the relatively new General Manger to Manny, Nathan, Santiago, and Denise all the front desk clerks, and the bartenders, and servers. Not once did we feel unwelcome.

As stated by many, the rooms are furnished with antiques, at least the new building is. I hear there are plans to renovate the original hotel, and look forward to seeing that accomplished. The rooms are airy as the ceilings have to be 12 ft tall. The rooms are relatively big. We stayed in the King room, and my dad and some friends stayed in double queen rooms. All were big enough. Rates are quite competitive with the other chains located just off the interstate highway.

Having free high speed internet was a major plus after spending some time in the "big" cities like Dallas and London where you get to pay "big" bucks for a room and then "big" bucks for internet access.

And if you are lucky, you may get to see a celebrity or two, as there is always a film being made in the area and the stars and crew often stay at the Plaza.

This is really the only neat place to stay if you're visiting the old West town of Las Vegas, New Mexico (which, sadly, does not have an old West feel, more like a depressed economy feel. But they do have great antique stores - well priced and really old interesting stuff - Rough Rider Antiques near the train station, also there's one on the plaza).

The food in the dining room is really good - real hash browns made from someone slicing real potatoes, a green chili Southwestern stew with chicken - yum!

The rooms are architecturally beautiful - 12 foot ceilings, tall windows, spacious. We stayed in the only King suite in the old part of the hotel - #301. The decor is tired - the mattress actually caved in the center, one lamp needed new bulbs to work (but maintenance never came), we didn't get the wake-up call we asked for (but so much light streamed in the windows that we woke up anyway), and one hair dryer was broken. Still, I enjoyed being there - the rooms are pretty low priced so I didn't feel ripped off. Big flat screen TV and the WiFi worked - yay!

The staff was very nice when you spoke to them. I tried to reach them in the morning though, and the phone rang & rang until it finally hung up on me - no one picked up. So you get the idea.

Still, you don't often get the chance to stay in a real live 1880's hotel where they used to have hangings in the center of a plaza that you can see from your room.

By the way, the "new" section is really an old building that was recently converted to more space for the Plaza Hotel. So it's old, but the rooms are more nicely decorated. If I were to come back, I'd stay in the new part.

Free WiFi and free hot breakfast made to order! (not buffet). Eggs, bacon, home fries, grapes, a homemade biscuit and coffee! Also, they allow dogs, which always makes me feel warm-hearted toward a hotel. (I didn't see any though, just people).

Went to Las Vegas, NM to visit the university there. Hotel was nice and charming. The rooms were nice, but old in antique style. I think the matress was also an antique. Not the most comfortable stay. Everything was fine, but had an emergency and had to leave early, no flexibility with reservation. Had to pay for the extra night we didn't use. I guess that is policy, but was disappointing. Overall, we were pleased, plus there are not many other options in the area. Rate included breakfast credit, but was sooo busy, service was a little slow, but friendly
