We stayed at this fine hotel on our return trip to Wyoming, checking out March 10, 2012. They gave us a beautiful room overlooking the plaza on a snowy night. The hotel was recommended by the visitor bureau on our trip coming down to NM, and we are sure glad we took their advice. Never stayed in a more comfortable room and bed. Just excellent! Great history and so nicely refurbished, but with keeping the historic flare. We plan to make another trip specifically to the LV area to stay longer at this hotel - what a relaxation.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a room over looking the plaza - you will enjoy it.

This is my the third time at the Plaza. My first two trips were motorcycle trips with 4-6 guys getting away from work and family obligations. We like starting our trip at Las Vegas for various reaons; close location to northern new mexico / southern colorado roads and the fact that the local police will always watch our trucks/trailers in their lot. Previous stays at the Plaza I would have to rate as excellent. My last stay on the way to Pagosa Springs, CO for a ski vacation with my family was not good on the dining room side.

The server I had in the morning of our departure I would have to rate as the worst server I've experienced in over 40 years of travel. Dining room was 1/3 full on a Monday morning at 9am. Server walked past my table at least 8 times in 10 minutes without offering a "hello" "good morning" or "how would you like some coffee?" It was like we didn't even exist. Finally after this dance, I got up and asked for a cup/pot of morning coffee at the table. Her tart response, "just a minute." I did wait another minute, but after another "drive by" to the kitchen, I confronted the server and asked what was going on in the hotel that would rate one server for a dining room that started out 1/3 full and was now 1/2 full. She replied that the hotel was having a function and she was the only server. Fine, I can deal with that as long as a server lets a customer know the lay of the land. Apparently because I had the "balls" to confront her, my table was now marked for what I call "attitude service." Bare minimum service with a poor attitude on the side. Fabulous. Two other tables complained, the same reply from the server was "just a minute."

I did follow up with the GM on the phone but never got a call back. (that speaks volumes, in my opinion). My advice to patrons of the Plaza; stay in the hotel (you will like it), drink at the bar (which has great service) but don't tread in the dining room unless you like poor service. In this case from a middle aged female server who needs to look for another place of employment in the Las Vegas area.....I have to rate my last stay as "average." Too bad that one server can make or break a stay at a hotel....

We were upgraded to a king room by Sean at check in; always a pleasant way to begin a stay. Many attractive pieces of antique furniture adorn the entire hotel including rooms, halls, restaurant and lobby. Feeling tired from a long couple of days driving, we decided to eat at the Plaza for dinner and were glad we did. The bar was a loud, lively place so we simply had a couple of cocktails in the dining room before our meal. Both our selections were tasty and a bit pricey but an ok value for a nice dinner out. There was a mistake (someone else's bar tab added to our room charge) on our bill at checkout and the morning desk clerk could not change it, so we got a note from her and it was corrected a few days later. We'll stay again next time in town.

Most people spending time in Las Vegas, New Mexico are at least somewhat interested in the Old West. That being the case, there is no reason not to stay at the Plaza Hotel, which was built in 1882, back in the days of Doc Holliday and Billy the Kid (who is said to have stayed there).

The Plaza is actually quite big, an indication of its importance back in the days when Las Vegas was a major center for commerce in the region and the hotel was known as the "Belle of the Southwest." There are large stairways (recognizable in No Country for Old Men), high ceilings in the large, re-modeled rooms (which are decorated with a smattering of antiques), and labyrinthine hallways. The hotel has even been expanded to include the historic old department store next door; now a walkway connects them.

Sean at the front desk is very friendly and helpful. The saloon attached to the hotel is fun if not as well-stocked as one might like. Local musicians often provide a soundtrack to the evening's festivities. However, unlike other hotels of the time, there are apparently few haunting. Original owner Byron T. Mills is said to appear occasionally in room 310, but that's about it.

Overall, if you're interested in the Wild West, a night at the Plaza Hotel is kind of mandatory. And, even if you're not, it sure beats the alternatives off I-25.

Room Tip: If you hope to see a ghost, room 310, said to be occupied by the spirit of original owner Byron T. M...

Stayed over a Saturday night in February. Beautiful hotel -- don't let the historic nature scare you away. Our room had every modern convenience needed in a home away from home. I booked our room on a travel website for the least expensive room since we had late night plans and would only be sleeping in the room. The hotel staff (Sean) upgraded our room to a room overlooking the plaza. The room was very large with appropriate period furniture. The large windows overlooked the plaza but since this was February, the plaza was wearing winter colors and not very inviting (typical winter in the high desert). Our plans changed and we had part of the evening to ourselves. We walked to a local restaurant and enjoyed a meal with drinks. The restaurant was less than half a block away. After our meal we returned to the hotel and listened to music in the attached hotel bar before retiring for the night. It was a peaceful night -- woke up refreshed and eager to continue our trip. The free breakfast at the attached restaurant was delicious - not your usual hotel free breakfast of bagels and cold cereal.

Room Tip: We stayed in the part of the hotel that used to be warehouse space. It was a third floor room near...

My stay at the Plaza Hotel was a terrible expirience. Sean, at the front desk in the evenings was the only friendly staff. Audrey at the front desk in the mornings (no tag so impossible to know how she writes her name) made her best effort to be UNHELPFUL and she was very successful at it. On several ocassions I asked for her help and her attitude, oh gosh the ATTITUDE was of someone who clearly does not want to work there or who could not care less about the clients of the hotel.

And housekeeping was non-existent. I was there for 3 nights. The tub was never cleaned; the room (219) had not been dusted during the last couple of years an neither had the windows been cleaned.
It is not a matter of the number of stars of a specific hotel, it is a matter of the customer service they provide. At the plaza hotel there is none.

Stayed 2004. It was only intended as a one night stay. Lasted a week. It was the bar staff and the friendly locals the food and the whole atmospher of the place we enjoyed.
