“A taste of Las Cruces”

Nopalito Restaurant

There are two Nopalito Restaurants in Las Cruces. We have eaten at the Mesquite Street restaurant regularly for thirty-plus years. Owned by the Gallegos family they offer traditional home-style southern New Mexican cuisine where you must know what is meant when asked "red" or "green"? Most dishes come with refried beans and rice. There is not a good salad menu or any vegetable choices but the green chile salsa, tostados compuestas, enchiladas, chile rellenos, huevos rancheros, chicken flautas, and smothered burritos are favorites of our family. Sometimes there are variances in the red chile choices depending on the family member that cooks that day. This restaurant can have the best red chile sauce ever. (One cook sometimes puts in cumin or comino that is a little too strong for me.) Both the red and green chile dishes tend to be on the mild side, but can have a little heat from time to time. When family members who have moved away come back home, they have to eat there at least once during their visit to get their "fix".

This Nopalito Restaurant is the second installment of what is a bit of a Las Cruces tradition. The first Nopalito is located on Mesquite. This little cafe has an awkward parking lot, in an area that can be easily overlooked. However, it is worth the effort to get there. For starters, the chips are served not with the usual red salsa, but with warmed mild green chiles, and a spicier cold chile option. I would highly recommend the green chile cheese enchiladas, which are melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The gorditos are also quite good. The decor is very unpretentious, the restaurant is clean, and the staff are friendly. Lunch specials run from 11:30 to 2:00 and cost about $5.00. All-in-all, a great little place to come and relax and have some simple and tasty Mexican fare.

That's pretty much it. OK and no surprises. Lots of free chips. Helpful staff.

Not my cup of tea. They can't make Chili Rellenos.

We met friends here for dinner around Christmastime 2011 and thoroughly enjoyed the fresh Mexican food. I was quite surprised by both the price and the freshness of the food that was served. I ordered a chicken fajita and I was presented with fresh off the bone chicken pieces - all white meat and it was delicious! The prices are phenomenally low and the service was warm, friendly, and accommodating. The restaurant has flannel tablecloths in a very unremarkable setting. Everything was clean and worthy of another trip back! It was a great experience overall!
