“A mixed experience”
Reviewed February 10, 2013

Thank goodness TripAdvisor allows real reviews - I'd hate to be forced into just a 1-5 star rating, especially with something like Garduno's. It was a varied meal with some good and some not-very-good.
Garduno's is a chain restaurant from northern NM and tried to find a niche in Las Cruces years ago. They built a fancy interior in the building on the north side of the mall, across the street from the Encanto, and opened to great fanfare. At the beginning it was crowded and there was a wait for a table. As the months passed the crowds dwindled. Eventually, they packed it up and left town.
So they are back in Las Cruces but with a greatly toned down presence - as the hotel restaurant at Encanto which used to be the Hilton in Las Cruces. (By the way it is Encanto, not Encato as trip advisor has it listed above). So we tried it for dinner Saturday night.
The place was pretty much empty at 6 p.m. with diners at only a few tables. Obviously locals are not flocking to the place.
We received a nice basket of red, white and blue chips to go with salsa that was hot - very good. I ordered enchiladas with blue corn tortillas and chicken. It came with sides of beans and
posole. The enchiladas consisted of two corn tortillas with chicken, topped with some cheese and the chile sauce of my choice - I picked red. The package was good. The side of beans was blah but the posole was excellent. It was tasty with nice tender chunks of pork. Wished I'd ordered just a bowl of posole.
This cost $14 which is probably one reason locals aren't visiting. That price is way, way beyond what the local mom and pop Mexican places charge for a plate of enchiladas.
My wife had a combination plate with a cup of carne adovada and a chicken burrito. The sides were refried beans and rice. The carne adovada was excellent, the burrito adequate and sides not really fit to eat.
Her's cost $13 which was a little steep as well for a cup of stew and a tiny burrito.
The meals included sopapillas which I can only describe as "industrial." McDonalds would be proud. These little sopapillas were obviously machine-made as they were perfect little rectangles and snow white. If you are just interested in an efficient honey-delivery system, these sopapillas will do.
Overall I think Garduno's is way too pricy for us locals especially when you can get better for a fraction of the price. For travelers staying in the hotel, it probably beats the hassle of trying to find one of the other places after a long day of travel.

“Lousy chips and salsa, but good shrimp fajitas”
Reviewed February 9, 2013

We live in New Mexico and eat a lot of Mexican food. The chips were extremely salty and the salsa was too hot to enjoy the flavor. The shrimp fajitas were good, but the refried beans were so lukewarm that the shredded cheese on top did not melt. We had an excellent waittress who brought a dish of hot refried beans, but then the watered-down flavor was even more evident. We would not eat here again. The main advantage was that it is inside the Hotel Encanto.

Menu had a nice variety of items. But everying is spiced up to the "T" - if you struggle with heartburn this may not be the place for you.

“Encanto Restaurant”
Reviewed January 21, 2013

The breakfasts we had at the Garduno were outstanding, as was the service. Combined with the wonderful environment of the beautiful SW style lobby complete with fountain, we were very spoiled.
