Mesilla is so close to el paso. We went for a couple of hours to shop and look around. Cute, cute, cute square with several eating options, great shopping for all and a little bit of history. I would highly recommend La Posta for a great mexican food experience. Don't forget to order a margarita! Its only about 45 minutes from downtown el paso. Well worth the time.

Lovely square with shops on three sides and a church on the fourth.
Billy the Kid giftshop was our first stop, good variety and reasonably priced.
Other shops had similar items at comparable prices.
La Posta for a good meal and a walk through history

We are Canadian snowbirds and spend our winters in Las Cruces. We have lots of house guests and take every one of them to Old Mesilla. The village dates from the early 1800's it was a Butterfield trail stop. There are stores in a square around the church. Many of the shops sell native Indian jewelry and works from local artists. There are several good restaurants on or near the plaza for a good Mexican lunch/dinner. It is a fun way to spend a few hours or a day.
