We were truly hoping that after the Gordon Ramsey visit, that this place would be first rate. Sorry to say that whatever Mr. Ramsey did for Meson did not stick.
First impressions mean quite a bit to me. Pulling into Meson de Mesilla reminds me of a walled compound. I should have known better when the dumpster takes up two of the valuable parking spaces in the lot. Their website goes as far as telling every one that the property is FOR SALE. Should have turned around and gone to one of the other places in Mesilla.
The entrance to the facility is off to the side after a brief walk through a nicely tended yard.
The entrance itself is hardly welcoming as it is nothing but an ante way with the hotel to the right and restaurant to the left. We were seated by the young man from the hotel front desk.
The owner needs to keep her voice down. She is loud and her voice carries throughout the dining room. Recommendation for the owner, dress a bit nicer if you want to present your place as upscale.
The restaurant is clean and well presented. The service provided by Chiko and Kelley was attentive yet unobtrusive. This was the highlight of the meal.
That is basically where the goodness ceases to exist. The food was not good and was quite pricey for what was served. Our party ordered a selection of ribs, chicken and fish.
One of our dishes (Chicken Involtini) had to be sent back to the kitchen because the meat was obviously freezer burned, thus making it taste bad with a chewy and tough texture.
No restaurant charging nearly $20 a plate should be using frozen chicken (per the owners admission). There are plenty of local sources for fresh chicken that would taste better and probably be more economical for the owner. Frankly, I have seen similar single serving portions (seafood and chicken) at Sam's Club.
The chicken parmesan was pretty good, but nothing special.
The ribs were presented well with about a 6 bone slab with an overpowering sauce. I would have liked to have seen an option of having a dry rack without the sauce. The shoestring potatoes and spoonful of cole slaw was disappointing. BBQ needs to come with more than a tablespoon of cole slaw.
The zucchini and onion side was overpowered by the onion and would have been better with less onion and way less pepper.
Moving on, we ordered dessert which was completely uneventful. Nothing homemade here and nothing worth $7-dollars. Raspberry cheesecake only had a drizzle of sauce and the chocolate truffle cake was hardly anything more than a brownie cake. Low quality desserts to say the least.
Overall, Meson de Mesilla is not a place that we will return. From the FOR SALE sign on the website to the serious lack of quality in the kitchen. You do not get your money's worth at this place. There are many other places in Mesilla to dine. I recommend that you pass this place up.
Gordon Ramsey would not be pleased if he were to walk in again.
