“One of the better places in Hobbs”
Reviewed June 25, 2013

The majority of times you will receive an excellent meal. The salad bar is very nice. The Cattle Baron is one of the three main stay for Hobbs eateries.

“Solid option in a sea of average”
Reviewed June 18, 2013

Hobbs doesn't have a lot of "great" eating establishments, but Cattle Baron's is a good option in town. We have eaten there many times over the last 20 years. While a little better quality than the average restaurant in town, it is by no means a top destination anymore. The food is average, the staff is friendly and the atmosphere is quite plain. The kids love the salad bar, which is a good size and variety. Overall, the service and food quality has declined over the years, but it is still one of the better options in Hobbs.

“I had higher expectations about the food”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

We went to have dinner last monday, the place is always crowded, but we only waited for our table a few minutes. Waiters are nice and neat. We loved the salad bar! Is delicius! The dishes are expensive but doesn't worth the price, taste like a china buffet food.

“Would have loved to rank this higher.....”
Reviewed March 4, 2013 via mobile

...but, as we entered the bar to sit at a high table, noticed stacks of dirty dishes behind the bar, and sticky tables. The bartender was very loquacious, he had good suggestions and information. He lauded the kitchen for its "from scratch" food. As we were perusing the menu, and after we ordered a bottle of wine ( new expanded wine list), servers from the main dining room decided to have a drink in the bar, (?), joking with locals and complaining about their jobs! How unprofessional and rude ! Paying customers should never hear this!
Food (meat in this case) was well prepared(prime rib and NY strip). Tuscan veggies were excellent, although sparse. Would we return again if we find ourselves in Hobbs, probably, but with the ardent hope for an upgrade in professionalism and hygiene.

“Really Adequate”
Reviewed February 14, 2013

I hate to damn by faint praise, but the Cattle Baron often missed the mark in food and service. It's a large place, in a small town, so it does a lot of business. But the steaks, theoretically the signature item, as often overcooked and not very tasty. Service is frequently better than the food, and the salad and cheese bar is better than the service. But I come for steaks. Or, used to, actually...until I found The Saxony Steakhouse over at the Hobbs Family Inn motel. Cattle Baron did serve a good banquet to a large group of well-traveled and discerning tourists who happened into my care, custody and control not too long ago. But that does not totally make up for the uneven performances on other visits. They do have a neat bar, which is a good place to meet folks. Sadly, its wine list is uninspiring.
