Whilst on our honeymoon in New Mexico, this is a place my husband wanted to go, he reads Billy The Kid books so is a bit of a nerd on him. . I wasnt bothered about going but we were going to Roswell and decided to drop by. Boy am I glad we did. What a fun place and only $5 each to get in!! ! Educational with a great amount of historical items on display. Billy The Kids gun! A rock he carved his name on. Lots of very cool western cowboy stuff. Wagons, the replica grave (the real one is a short 5 minute drive away), an old jail cell from the time and you can take your photo in it looking like a fellon, vintage cars. A great stop for all ages. Great gift shop too that is very reasonable.

The Billy the Kid Museum is one fun place. If you have any preconcieved ideas about The Kid, most of them will be challenged during your visit. The "curator" is a third generation resident of Fort Sumner and second generation museum owner. Don't miss the video--very well done and lots of good info before you spend time looking at all of the exhibits. The room of weapons resembles an arsenal with lots of old rifles, six shooters, etc. As you keep walking, you will spy old saddles, lots of interesting antiques, old cars, and much more.
What a fun place to spend a few hours with an iconic American outlaw.

Not far off the main road. The museum is quite old, squeaky floors and lots of items to look through and buy. Behind the museum is Billy the Kids grave. In the back of my mind I question its authenticity, but it is still a good break from a long drive. Good stop for history buffs.

This is a neat museum - my husband said 'looks like they just kept everything & it eventually got old!' :-) They do have lots of stuff some people would consider junk, but it's fascinating to me. Several rooms filled with things like vehicles (including an antique hearse and some really cool old cars and trucks), family memorabilia (marriage license etc), typewriters, guns, kitchen stuff... and of course the Billy the Kid items. Everything that's not authentic is so marked - replica or just has nothing to do with Billy.

The restrooms were squeaky clean - in fact the whole place was. There's a nice gift shop with some interesting items plus the usual stuff you find in any travel store.

We had been there about 30 years ago, and enjoyed it then too. The people who own it are super nice and tell you all about things. Would take visitors there.

I gave this an average rating because I did not get to look inside, but I wanted to let people looking on TA know it is not open on Sundays so you can plan accordingly. It was a nice place to stop because there are areas outside you can look at and there are some fun picture taking opportunities you can take advantage of without entering the building.
