“Soooo Unique”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 17, 2013

We first heard about this on a TV show years ago. We decided then that someday we would stay there. This is unique is every way. The location is in a "cave" on the cliff side. Those who picture a damp dark place couldn't be more wrong. It is dark if you close off the 2 sliding glass doors and turn off the lights, otherwise it is plenty light. It is absolutely not damp but just the opposite, dry like the entire southwest. It is cool in there (about 65 degrees) but they provide space heaters. We preferred just to open the sliding doors and let the outside heat in. Gayle took us out there and showed us around. Everything you need for your stay (except dinner food) is there for you. For dinner we bought things to grill (on the gas grill provided) and ate outside on the patio rock at the table. Taking your food up there was no easy trick but well worth the views at sunset with the humming birds entertaining you every second. The bed was super comfortable and the shower coming out of the rock wall was such a wonderful touch. There are candles provided for the bedroom and the Jacuzzi that made it romantic. The three nights we spent there we the highlight of our 12 day trip to the southwest.

This was the best experience ever and we are so glad we were able to add staying here for two nights on our "Out West Family Vacation"! This place was so beautiful inside and had all the amenities that any condo has the offer that you would not believe it was a cave except for the walls - which made it so cool. The sunset was stunning to watch and just the experience of staying here was just awesome!

I booked Kokopelli Cave after reading about it in an article. I'll be honest -- the pics looked rather kitchy. But the cave is huge, 1700 square feet, so the amount of furniture made sense once we arrived. This would be a fantastic family destination as it could sleep at least 7 people.

The cave is cool. But it's the little touches that really make a difference. You can literally spend hours staring at the walls. The host provides markers and rocks to decorate. These little mementos are hidden throughout the cave.

Everything is provided for a light dinner and continental breakfast. There is a grill, small tv, some VHS and DVDs, CD player, every toiletry you may need -- including extra toothbrushes and toothpaste.

The bed was comfortable, the hike down to the cave very easy. We literally did not want to leave. We spent every possible minute savoring the cave.

We spent one night in March at Kokopelli Cave Bed and Breakfast with our daughter and two of our grandchildren. The apartment was clean and comfortable, and the manager was very friendly and efficient. We enjoyed our short stay there and only wished we could have stayed longer.

Probably the most unusual place I'll ever stay. I went with a friend for a weekend away from responsibilities in nearby Durango, and this place totally fit the bill. It really is a cave, but it's very comfy and surprisingly large. We didn't want to leave, and we were so glad we had booked 2 nights. Very friendly manager leads you there by car, walks down the trail with you (not too hard, but don't try to carry too much), and shows you how everything works in the cave. I would agree with the previous poster that the food that's provided is not very healthy; but we had brought our own supplies anyway. It was nice to have basics provided like olive oil, milk, seasonings, etc.

This one is very hard to rate. It is a unique experience and certainly that alone merits a high rating. But it fell short of our expectations in some ways.

We went there as part of a larger tour of the SW, as a stopover on our way from Lake Powell to Santa Fe.

Pros: Very clean, has everything you could need, fun to get to, unique and interesting, spacious enough for a family with three kids. Surprisingly pleasant and dry inside.

Cons: views are kind of dull/industrial, no real wildlife seen, decor is sort of goofy-cheap-rustic. We were very unhappy with the food, but that is probably unfair. For the price point, and the location, it is probably typical. For us, and recall you are stuck in a cave in the middle of nowhere, it was awful. Bad quality OJ with plastic wrapped mass produced cinnamon buns, a bowl of green apples and tiny boxes of sugar coated cereal. The lunch supplies were similar quality. I would recommend if you are a healthy eater or serious about food you leave time to get your own stuff (our fault).

NOTE: I think almost anyone who can walk can easily make it down to the cave. But if you are afraid of heights you may find it a little unnerving. Otherwise, no worry.

From start to finish the experience was perfect. The look on the faces of our teenagers when we walked in to the cave was priceless! We stayed on Thanksgiving night and it's a holiday we''ll never forget. My husband and I are already planning a romantic trip back without the kids. Our host Gayle was friendly, personable and helpful as we planned our trip. The cave was cozy, clean and completely comfy. Next time we''re staying more than one night!
