You have to check in at the welcome center at the traffic light. Very easy to miss. We chose the mesa top tour. We should have chosen the cliff face tour. The tours are two hours and were pricey at $100 for 4 of us. Our guide seemed knowledgeable but I have to question the accuracy of his knowledge. Very surface knowledge and many things that he didn't know about which I know scientists have the answers for.

I recommend other dwellings. I was not impressed and neither were our kids (11,9,8.5).

We are very sorry that your experience was not what you were expecting. Our guides are allowed to interpret the site from a cultural point of view incorporating oral history and current traditions while practicing an oral tradition by learning from each other, our elders, and even our guests. Thank you for sharing your feedback with us, and we hope that you enjoyed the other aspects of your journey.

My wife, daughter and I took this tour because of its relative proximity to our Santa Fe hotel, and because we wanted a sample of the incredible history in this area. We took the "Cliff Tour" for $20 each - this price seemed a bit steep, but we gave it a try...

My reaction about 2/3 of the way thru was "this is easily the best guided tour I've ever had, of anything." Our guide, Porter (read the other reviews- yes, him again) was thoroughly knowledeable, patient, and enaging. He invited interruptions from the group, and easily fielded questions that ranged from children asking if the natives had pets, to adults asking about the status of the various pueblos' education programs. Throughout the tour he seamlessly weaved history, humor, and the modern day condtion of his community into a presentation that tied everything together, and ensured that we appreciated the significance of where we were standing.

Unfortunately we did not take the full tour, which includes a visit to the top of the cliffs. I would recommend the full tour to anyone who has the time.

Great place to visit in the Santa Fe area. Our guide was quite passionate about his history and full of infromation. The views from the top of the cliffs are stunning. It is a little expensive ... but well worth the price.

Went to the Puye Cliff Dwellings because we thought we should go to one of the cliff dwelling sites ( other is Bandoleir National Monument) while in NM. Were surprised that we HAD to buy a tour to see the dwellings. OK, we reluctantly bought the pass for the Cliff Dwellings tour ( happy that we qualified for Senior Rate at 55). Porter ended up giving the best tour we've ever been on. A local member of the Santa Clara Pueblo, degree in Pueblo Studies from Univ of Norther NM, he answered all questions and shared an archaelogical as well as social history of the Cliff Dwellings and the pueblo. After the tour we had purchased , he offered we upgrade to the Full Adventure which included the Mesa and we determined the old knees would make it up the ladders necessary. Boy, what we would have missed!!!! Views as far as Colorado!!! And the opportunity to go down into a Kiva ( even if it was not an authentic represenation) was a thrill.
Definitely worth the money!!!! And say Hi to Porter if you are lucky enough to have him as your tour guide!!!

Family vacation stop with two teenagers. A great tour due to local Santa Clara Pueblo tourguides who provide so much more context to the history and culture of the peoples who lived in the area. Our family has frequently visited Bandolier (grandparents live in the area), but this was our first trip to Puye which had been closed following the area fires in 2000 until May 2009. Well worth the visit. Bring water to drink and allow at least two hours for the entire experience - requires climbing on rocks and steep ladders.
