Yeah the water level is way down but as of March 2nd 2013 it is up about 8 feet and rising with zero water passing thru the dam. The fish are more concentrated with the low water levels and the Stripped Bass should start hitting soon along with the White Bass. Crappie are where you find them and when you do it's GAME ON! Spring Break starts next week and continues for 2 weeks so the College crowd will descend on the Lake. BEWARE! no whining allowed.

I would not recomend bringing out the family on any Holiday weekend ( Memorial day, 4th of July, Labor Day) as it is definately not a relaxing place at these times unless you can hang , but if you like to PARTY PARTY PARTY then this is your place LOUD AND PROUD DOWN ON THE DRUNK CROWDED BEACHES! and till the sun comes up.. NO LIE

I have been going to THE BUTTE since 1979 to party, camp, fish, swim and boat and have had a blast cause I know what to expect when I get there and been stuck in that unforgiving sand plenty of times and even if you have a 4x4 you better get out and walk down in the direction you intend driving before hand to check the depth of the sand.. LOL!! it's all part of the experience! Be prepared for Sand storms that will eat your campsite alive in June and July it is common to see tents, beach towels, umbrellas, inflatibles etc. soaring out over the lake in an unexpected SQUALL.. 20 minutes later it's all beautiful again. nothing like a good ol' sanddog or sandburger!! LOL!

If you have a boat the best place to camp is on the EAST side of the lake away from the CRAZIES.. The 4th of July Firework display is incredible!! and a must see!! any time during the middle of the week is perfect for family camping etc.. I am taking the pontoon down for the first time on the 15th of this month and every weekend after that all Summer, it is already shorts weather down in T or C !! We were out on the Lake Dec1-2 it was 69 degrees absolutely gorgeous and only 10-12 other boats on the whole lake and trhe water was like glass.

Hope this helps any Non Residents of first timers to THE BUTTE.. I LOVE IT!!!! if you can hang you will to!

just my 2 cents from a lifetime resident of N.M.

It is always nice to walk by the Elephant Butte lake, you can even rent a boat and enjoy a couple of hours on the lake. Pack your cooler and take your drinks and lunch on the boat.

Elephant Butte is a lovely lake surrounded by colorful mesas and stark desert. It is a great place to swim... actually, pretty much the only place to swim.

I drove through the recreational facilities, the marina, and park. I saw the magnificent dam. The area was beautiful, and well maintained.

We visited EB about 4 yrs ago and were so surprised to see the water level about 30' lower than it was. We visited the weekend of October 12-14 and the water was calm, cool and the fishing was pretty good too. Great park to visit for the day. Bring your own shade.
