The Cabins at Cloudcroft
Reviewed May 12, 2013

Have stayed at Cabins at Cloudcroft many times and can't wait to go back again. After reading the other reviews, I think they got a raw deal: so they've had several owners over the past few years, so have many of the businesses in Cloudcroft(that's what comes of a small mountain town and if you've never lived in the mountains, you don't realize how many people move there thinking how great is will be until the first snow, hahaha, think again); also, try to run a business like the cabins - they supply everything for their customers but groceries and personal items, how do you think they can make any money if everything was brand-new? And of course they have to get their money up front - this day and time, too many people skip out on the check(maybe not you, if your reading this, but many people do). Anyway, I think the Cabins are great and stay there everytime I'm in Cloudcroft - many of the other businesses in Cloudcroft should take a lesson in customer service from the current owners as the retail business dealers in town treat their clientele as if they are shoplifters or bums! Unless you have a certain look about when you walk in certain businesses, you don't even get asked if you can be helped! And I've been vacationing in Cloudcroft for years...with family, friends, and solo...spending plenty of money at times and not so much others. But that shouldn't matter; and I still love the area; it's beautiful, quiet, and clean. If I ever get to retire, I want to end up there.

Our group of 10 stayed at the Cabins at Cloudcroft as part of a week of field work at White Sands National Monument. After the heat of August temperatures at White Sands (35 to 40C), it was pleasant to retreat to the cooler climes of Cloudcroft at 2500m elevation.
Our hosts at the Cabins at Cloudcroft were Marshall and Beverly Coker. Beverly was most helpful and friendly, procuring sleds for the dunes and taking one member of our party fishing. They were available each time we sought them for information or assistance. In addition, they were most helpful in receiving our field equipment shipment in advance of our arrival.
We stayed in cabin 16, featuring four bedrooms, two full baths, full kitchen, and large sitting and eating areas. The cabin is not luxurious, but a standard mountain cabin with wood paneled walls and ceilings, and furniture, flooring, and dishes that don’t exactly match but get the job done.
The cabin sleeps 10 comfortably—a king (the master bedroom with private bathroom), two doubles, and one bedroom with four singles. There was some storage in each bedroom—a closet in most—and feather comforters on each bed. There were plenty of towels and washcloths in the bathrooms. There was a roll of toilet paper in each bathroom as well, although we were advised to provide our own.
The kitchen had sufficient dishes, utensils, and cookware despite the fact that most of it did not match. We cooked full dinners each night for 10 people with only minor juggling of items needing oven time. We found that the oven was far slower in heating and cooking than we expected. Perhaps this is due to our inexperience at high-altitude cooking. The refrigerator was full size and the freezer included an ice maker. The toaster, coffee maker, and microwave were useful. In addition, we used the outdoor grill (propane provided) for two of the meals.
The eating area adjacent to the kitchen was just the right size for the 10 of us. I was a bit surprised to find plastic chairs around the table, but in the end they worked out very well. Because we used the table space for working as well as eating, heavier chairs would have been more arduous to move around.

The seating area was only a bit tight for us. The television (cable provided) is a smaller one and not suitable for large viewing parties. On the other hand, you’re up in the great outdoors in Cloudcroft, so get out and have fun! There is a fireplace with wood and starters provided. We found that smoke came into the cabin from time to time on the only occasion we lit a fire. I don’t know how much of it was due to strong winds outside, but the darkened stone above the fireplace opening suggests that this might be a regular feature.

Outside of the cabin is a covered porch with a small table and several chairs. A short flight of six or seven stairs leads to the parking area (enough for two or three vehicles, depending on size). Wireless network access was provided gratis, but the front porch was the only location that it was consistently available. The speed was reasonably fast.
Apart from the cabins, Cloudcroft has resources for visitors, but make careful note of closing times. The gas station is open 24 hours per day, but the Mercantile (small market and baker of delicious pies and breads) had hours of 7a to 7p, and most stores closed by 5p. We did not eat at any restaurants in town and bought most of our groceries in Alamogordo, about 15 miles down the mountain from Cloudcroft.

Cabins at Cloudcroft have been through several owners-in the past year,it has come under new ownership once again. There are several cabins available-most of them are duplex in style. Very comfortable-all cooking utensils are supplied as well as linens-all you supply is your food and personal items. It is not a housekeeping facility, but the managers/owners are very helpful and accommodating most of the time-if it's not really, really busy. Anyway, the Cabins are within walking distance of the Village of Cloudcroft and the park where most of the festivals are held. That makes it nice for convenience sakes. Try out the Cabins at Cloudcroft in Cloudcroft,New Mexico---gives you the quiet you're looking for in the mountains.
