“Weekend Getaway for Anniversary”
Reviewed June 12, 2013

We live just a short distance to the east (90 miles) and have been to the Lodge on many occasions. We decided to spend our anniversary here this year and have dinner at Rebecca’s. The Lodge has lots of charm and is very unique for the area. Service was excellent from the front desk staff. Our room was in the main Lodge....the rooms could really use updating though as they are showing their age....one could still redecorate with period furnishings to keep with the vibe of the place. The rooms are smallish which is to be expected of a 100 year old facility. The rooms on the 2nd and 3rd Floor in the main lodge are only accessible by stairs for those who might have trouble navigating stairs. The location is lovely and makes for a nice weekend away from the heat of the summer. The elevation is nearly 9000 feet up here so the temps are usually in the 70s F even in the middle of the summer. Lots of pleasant hikes in the area. Recommended.

We live in Carlsbad, a mere 115 miles away and needed a short break. Pat was very helpful in helping me find a great room, and rate, even though it was last minute notice. We can not say enough about how friendly ALL the staff was. Hotel was full, since it was a holiday week end and everyone was wonderful. Dinner was delicious, I especially enjoyed my appetizer of Blacked Chicken Cheesecake!!! Our steaks were done to perfection. We highly recommend this hotel. Do NOT expect the usual "chain" type places, this one has charm instead. We also hiked the rail trail and on a clear day you can see the valley below and the White Sands.

Room Tip: All the rooms are different. I found the staff very helpful in helping me pick out the one best su...

We stayed in the main lodge. Our room was in need of a thorough cleaning and refurbishment. Bathroom was tiny. We like staying in unique hotels and this certainly had some charm but more care in maintenance would go a long way. If you do stay here, make sure you hike on the rail trail in the trestle recreation area.

Quiet mountain retreat in a quaint village. Some local hikes and history to explore. The golf course looks challenging and fun. The bar and restaurant offered excellent service and good food. The Spa massages we got from Jim were top quality and therapeutic. This is a good place for weekend getaway, or as a place to visit on the way to White Sands or Carlsbad.

The Lodge has a resident ghost, Rebecca, after whom the restaurant is named. It is said that the haunting is represented by 'mischievous' behaviour; lights flickering, misplaced items etc. Surely it was she who placed the hair in my pancakes for breakfast in the restaurant and provided the dressing- drenched salad the evening before along with the accompaniment of the loud drunks at the adjoining table. It must have been she who has created such a limited and low-end wine selection at the bar - there are bottles of good wines available in the restaurant but not in the bar - only low-end vinos there. You will be limited to not taking your drinks outside to a nice gazebo overlooking a hillside or to the pool. There is a small and not very clean exercise area with a few weights , a stepper and a 'universal gym' available - the key to which is got from the front desk. The rooms are nice, the beds are comfortable and there is lots of hot water. Great hiking in the area. When you tire of the Rebecca-influenced meals (and you will - almost immediately) go to Big Daddy's Restaurant - just down the hill to the east - great home-made pies and cobblers and standard (read 'reliable') foods from of the Texas-southwest variety. This is where you can get your eggs cooked to perfection and wear your hat at the table.

Room Tip: Think ' ground floor'

This is a very unique property. It is a historic luxury hotel in a small mountain town. The property is well worn and in only average condition. Walls in our room were dirty, window latches broken, excercise room floor was filthy. The linens were thick, spotless and high quality. Room carpet was newer and clean. The service and charm are truely excellent. We had three meals in rebecca's and the food and service were top knotch. The bar was well stocked and didn't hit us with tourist priced or sized drinks.

The biggest shock was checkout. The advertized price was final price. The advertized price included taxes, and even a tip for breakfast waiter! I've not encountered that before, I am used to bed tax, sales tax, resort fee, energy surcharges etc. You know what I mean. Old fashioned honesty. You can bet my wife and I will return.

Only the computers, phones, ... give away that the times have changed, everything else is well kept up and the front desk night clerk was very helpful and gave us a late night tour of the place. Clearly he is proud and knowledgeable to work there.
