“Interesting historic hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 19, 2012

We stayed at the Retreat, which is a separate building on the Lodge grounds. The room was large. There was a small kitchenette, a separate bedroom with a queen size bed, a large room with two double beds, a big bathroom, a gas fireplace, and a balcony. The room was a standard motel room, but clean and comfortable. The view was outstanding. The Lodge is lovely. There was a fire in the lobby and we enjoyed breakfast in the dining room. The staff was very helpful.

This is a historic hotel, very well maintained and just oozes charm! Every room is different so there is no cookie cutter approach like modern hotels. Rooms are well-appointed, though some of them are small. Rebecca's, the dining room, serves some of the best food in New Mexico. And the Lodge is high in the Sacramento Mountains above Alamogordo so it's cool and refreshing. You might even see Rebecca herself, who is said to haunt the hotel!

Room Tip: Be sure to ask the front desk for the key to the tower and go up for the view.

Cloudcroft was a logistically-convenient stop for us on a long trek, and we didn't know what to expect with this hotel. We were in for a real surprise. The restaurant was awesome! Also, the hotel staff was friendly and helpful, and the rooms were very comfortable. The room we stayed in was small (i.e. normal sized without the usual wasted space), but it was perfectly suited to our needs. The decor was more traditional/Victorian than I typically like, but the place had a great historical vibe to it. The best part for me was the comfortable bed. I should have checked to see what kind of mattress they had, because it was a total cloud. And all of this at a very reasonable price. We loved our stay at The Lodge and would definitely stay there again.

Set 9000 feet above the baking plains of Alamogordo, the Lodge exudes a pleasant aura of coolness and serenity. The common areas have that homey lodge feeling that encourages comeraderie among those who are staying here. However, like many vintage hotels, the rooms are VERY,VERY Small. To be fair, they are nicely decorated with period furnishings and they maximize the efficiency of the space they have to work. with. Under the circumstances, it all seems to make good ergonomic sense. Ours was the standard room. We took a peek at the "larger" rooms and they were a bit bigger but not by much. All this was a minor concern since the charming premises more than compensated for the tightness of the sleeping accommodations..The restaurant, Rebecca's, was a STAND OUT! Real cuisine, served by professionals. A real bargain for such an exquisite culinary experience.
Three Critical observations: 1.) The Halloween decorations were childishly overdone. It gave the grounds and the lodge a sloppy, cluttered feel. 2.) No draft beer selections 3.) The desk staff were chattering earnestly with each other as we were checking in. We almost felt that we were an unwelcome interruption to their important discussion. Such conversations could easily be suspended for the 3 minutes or so it takes for the welcoming process to be completed. At the very minimum, at least pretend to care that we are staying there. But, overall, we enjoyed the unique historical character of this charming old place and will recommend to anyone.

We stayed at the lodge in the second week of October. The weather and scenery around Cloudcroft were very pleasant with the aspens starting to turn. The lodge does not seem quite as well maintained as it was a few years ago, but it is still quite acceptable and still a fine choice for people who enjoy historic hotels. The staff were generally helpful, but they lost a dinner reservation and there was a small issue with the room reservation (which was easily resolved). The desk clerk could have used a bit of training in attitude and customer service. He was not bad. He just was not good. The whole place was decorated for Halloween, which seems a bit early but was fun. We would recommend the lodge for a nice weekend get away, particularly for people not travelling with children.

Room Tip: Borrow a key from the desk clerk and go up to the tower for nice views.

The views are fabulous and service was wonderful. The golf course is beautiful and if you do not golf it is a wonderful opportunity to bird watch while riding along with someone who does. A very serene and relaxing place to be. Did not want to leave, was there last week of Aug. and the days were warm but not hot and nights cool enough for a light sweater. Most definitely a great getaway from everyday stress!

Room Tip: We stayed on the 3rd floor. Not a good idea if you have difficulty with stairs as there is no eleva...

Think of a hunting lodge, with gracious common rooms, coloured glass windows and rather heavy antique furniture. Add friendly staff. Supplement with a great restaurant and wide views. We stayed in The Pavillion which has rustic character, is rather old, and is a short walk/drive away, but rooms are completely satisfactory and somehow it was a more authentic location - the smell of woodsmoke in the air, for example. Niggles? The wine list in the restaurant seemed unimaginative - no New Mexico wines, for example. The Pavillion is described as a bed and breakfast hotel so we thought breakfast was automatically included - I still don't know if this is ordinarily the case or not, but the issue was sorted out by staff. Accessibility is a bit of an issue - check if you're in a wheel chair or have trouble with stairs. We had a package deal including dinner and had a muddle over the tickets and entitlement. (But as I say all of these were sorted out pleasantly by staff.) Oh, and the surround to the swimming pool was crumbling and hurt to walk on - but work-people were there fixing it as we left. None of these niggles seriously detracts from the good experience. Highly recommended.

We are very pleased that you had a good stay. We are happy to report that the swimming pool deck and the back walkway are complete. They look (and feel) wonderful! The rooms at The Pavilion normally include breakfast, but a package deal may change that condition. This is normally discussed at the time of reservation and we will provide a refresher for our reservation specialists. We are in the process of our annual wine list review and your input is greatly appreciated. Our guest’s feedback is invaluable and helps keep us on track. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience.
