“Succor in the desert”
Reviewed July 27, 2011

This Best Western was a good motel to stay in, in this NE desert town in New Mexico.
The room was clean and had a nice Native American decor to it. Good size breakfast room with decent breakfast. Near the Capulin Volcano National Monument. There is a small pool (we didn't swim in it.) There is Native American jewelry to buy in the lobby and in a small store enroute to the breakfast room. Suggest you make advance reservations due to isolated location.

We stayed in the suite, and it was great. Nice jacuzzi. The complementary breakfast is also the best in town.
We had to stay in Clayton because our Uhaul broke down. When the owners found out that we had to reload our truck, they send out 2 maintenance guys to help us for over an hour until the job was done.

We wouldn't have stayed in Clayton by choice, but in the end we were glad we stayed at this hotel. It was great.

Ok, there's not a lot to do in Clayton, NM, but if you just need a place to rest on a long trip, then this hotel is great for you. We stayed in a suite with our four small children. It was very comfortable, squeaky clean, nicely-appointed. Honestly, I couldn't find a thing wrong with it. Even the A/C was quiet (I hate hotels with loud a/c units). The breakfast buffet was hot and top-notch (more than just a selection of cheap pastries). The playground is now fenced to keep the little ones in. In short, we all had a great time.

One thing to note: The pillows are thick, so if you like a thin pillow, you might want to bring one along.

Other than the Venetian Hotel in Vegas, I can't remember a nicer room. We stayed in the handicap room because we wanted a King on the first floor. It was large and extremely clean. The staff was friendly and helpful. They have a hot breakfast that was very good. With tax we paid $104 with an AARP card. I traveled for a living. I stayed in a lot of rooms.

Trip Advisor rated this place so highly I had to try it on the way home from Colorado Springs. Having had a horrible experience at a hotel there (see Cliff House review from me) I was pleased to fine a quiet, comfortable room.. Internet was provided as promised. Young lady at check in was pleasant and helpful. Breakfast buffet was complimentary, simple and wonderfully delicious. Room was clean beyond spotless.. Wonderful night. While Clayton is not the hot spot of NM., it can boast itself as having one of the best, inexpensive lodging options in the state. I will return.

While driving from NW Arkansas to Colorado, our family was in need of somewhere to spend a night. After much research, we decided that Clayton, NM was our best option. We used points for our room, so I cannot really comment on the pricing of this property. When we pulled up, I have to admit I was skeptical about this hotel as the exterior is that of an old two-story motor lodge. Upon entering the quaint lobby, though, my concerns were assuaged. The lobby is decorated quite quaintly in the southwestern style with a small water feature. Unfortunately, the front desk staff had a good amount of difficulty figuring out how to check us in with a points voucher. We arrived quite late in the evening and parking was a very big problem as well. The lot seems too small for the number of rooms.

Our room was quite and clean. It was obvious that the interior had been renovated and the bathroom was quite nice. The room size was nothing special but definitely adequate.

The complimentary breakfast is in the same building as the lobby across the parking lot from the rooms. It appeared that this may be the only establishment in Clayton which serves breakfast, though, as it was quite busy with walk-in paying customers. At check-in we were issued a ticket to get breakfast. We went down in shifts as our kids woke up, which seemed to cause some confusion with the waitstaff. When my son and I went down, we were informed that there would be a wait as all the tables were full. I asked if we could just take our food to go as we were in a hurry to get on the road, and the waitress seemed relieved that we were willing to do that.

There was a nice fenced-in area with a playground and pool (I think), but we did not have time to utilize either.

This is, obviously, an older motel-style property, but it has been been well maintained, and it is a good value for the price. The rooms were clean, relatively quiet, and comfortable and we all slept well. This is a property where the guests often sit outside their rooms and visit, and it had a very friendly atmosphere. The buffet-style breakfast was hearty and enjoyable. Also, be aware that dining options are almost non-existent in Clayton so, based on conversations with other travelers, the two sit-down restaurants are usually overwhelmed during peak travel days, i.e. long waits. Also, on the first leg of our trip, we left a bracelet in our room, and they promptly called me, then held on to it and returned it to me on our return trip through the area. If you want luxurious, destination-style accommodations, this is not the place, but it is a good option when traveling through the area.
