Talk about stepping back in time, the Eklund offers a wonderful taste of the old west with all the modern conveniences. Walking into the lobby of this small well-kept hotel was a treat in itself, you really feel like you're stepping back in time. The rooms are bright and neatly kept.

The Eklund was our oasis for 2 days on a recent trip to New Mexico. It was such a pleasent change from the typical hotels we had used in the past. The front desk staff took the time to visit with us and offer information both about the town of Clayton and the surrounding area. They were quick to speak each time we entered the lobby and made sure we had everything we needed during our stay.

The dining room was totally different from anything I could imagine in a small hotel. You feel right at home in either casual or formal dress. The staff was wonderful and there to serve your every need. It was so much fun to sit back while enjoying an exellent steak and watch the townspeople of Clayton interacting with friends and family. This must be the "in" place to be seen in Clayton and we will be seen there again.

We used to eat at the Eklund all the time when we went through Clayton, NM. It used to be a cozy little joint full of atmosphere with pretty darn good food. Well, it seems that they took a notion to remodel the restaurant and now it isn't half as good as it used to be. The food quality was "ok", the service was pretty bad (not much to choose from in waitresses I guess), but what bugged me the most was all the charm was gone. Now it is just like a lot of other non-descript restaurants. B-O-R-I-N-G. Sometimes you just want to say..."If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Along with the restaurant, they decided to fix up the hotel and start renting rooms out again. Sure the rooms are cute and nicely decorated (there is even a spook or two around to titilate), but what I can't understand is why they don't allow pets. The front desk manager said that they don't because they would have to go through the lobby where the "air" would mingle with the "air" from the restaurant. I would love to know what air-borne diseases she thinks people are going to get from taking your pet up to your hotel room. Lamest excuse I ever heard.

We probably won't be going back.
