My husband and I planned a 3-day vacation to Cimarron after finding the St. James Hotel online. Not only are we interested in the paranormal, but after reading about the history of the St. James Hotel and the Santa Fe Trail, it really sounded like a neat place to go. We stayed 2 nights in Room #17, Mary Lambert's room. I did not experience anything paranormal, but my husband felt a "hand" on his knee before falling asleep. The staff at the front desk and in the restaurant were very helpful and attentive. The food is pretty pricey, but is very good, and the atmosphere in the restaurant/bar is awesome and there is so much history to see. We also stayed 1 night in the Doc Holliday room, which does not have it's own bathroom, but the shared bathroom at the end of the hall was available whenever we needed it, and is nicely done. We also enjoyed hearing about the history of the town during the "Legends By Lantern Light" tour of Cimarron.

Room Tip: Stay in the "old" part of the hotel for an authentic 1800's feel. If you want more modern amenities, stay in the annex.

What a Jewel of a place in the middle of no where, stopped by for a quick bite for lunch and was so impressed that we came back for drinks latter in the evening. Wonderful history nicely preserved with friendly folks...........try the fried corn on the cob, WOW!

We arrived at the hotel excited to have a good experience. We settled into the Bat Masterson suite and had a nice dinner and drink at the hotel. We went to bed around 11pm but before we settled in one of my friends wanted to go out to look at something and to her shock she smelled a strong smell of propane. I to went into the hallway to see what she smelled and the fumes were very strong. We found the security guard and he was not concerened about the problem. We asked to be moved for safety reasons to the new hotel. Isn't the am we asked if the problem was found and we were told the guy who fixes this sort of thing was not in yet. I would think a propane leak would be a serious problem, but not,to them. Before we checked out my other friend went back into the old part of the hotel and the smell was again very strong. The help at the front desk were not concerened. Amazing we went on line and found that in 2004 there was an explosion at the hotel due to a propane problem and there were injuries. So beware if you stay at the hotel. It is sad they don't seem upset about the issue. M Swenson

On behalf of the Express St. James Hotel, we appreciate your concerns and apologize. Hotel staff did respond to the information you conveyed but in a low key manner. Since the hotel does not utilize propane in any form we were unsure about the reported smell. Erring on the side of safety, all gas associated lines were checked and are in good working order. The 2004 boiler explosion referred to in the review was a result of equipment in place when the building was under different ownership and management. Current owner purchased and then rehabilitated the hotel in 2009. The 2004 boiler mentioned in review was removed and a new system was installed. This system was recently checked by contracted safety company in February 2012. If you have questions please call and we will be happy to assist. Thank you!

We have visited the hotel on several occasions. It is a very interesting place to visit and has a good restaurant in which to eat. On this occasion we were served by a delightful girl, Cara. The service was excellent and the food very good.

Pay a visit upstairs, if you dare. During the day I was just brave enough, but the nightime is another matter altogether. Hype or not, it freaked me out.

Cimarron is a beautiful area and Taos, about a 75 minute drive away, is also well worth visiting. Would recommend The Gorge restaurant.

Room Tip: As we only ate and did not stay at the St James I cannot express and opinion about the accommodation.
