“Bad all the way around”
Reviewed May 27, 2008

The service was poor and the food was worse. None of our party of 4 was pleased with their meals. Chicken adovada was bland, the salad was drenched in dressing, the blue corn enchiladas were filled with cheep chedder cheese, the jalapeno starters were like something you would microwave from a box, and the refried beans and spanish rice were just plain bad. If this is the best of New Mexican cuisine, then I feel bad for New Mexicans.

“Absolutley loved it”
Reviewed May 12, 2008

I have been wanting to go here for about 5 years ever since I read a friends book about it. I was hesitant as my hubby doesn't like Mexican food. In addition, we arrived about 3pm and weren't sure they would be serving - but that was not the case at all. We had a choice of lunch or dinner menu and there was a nice group of people there.

My husband ordered a beef wrap - minus the beans and he could not say enough good about it. He told everyone there that it was excellent. I had a taco meal - one beef and one chicken and they were very excellent. There was a nice assortment of cocktails and beers as well as good ice tea.

We sat outside on the covered patio and it was nicely decorated. We would definitely recommend going there and would go back in a blink if we are in the area again.

Best margaritas anywhere. If any restaurant in the United States embodies New Mexican cuisine, this is it. Make the trip; it's worth the effort. The chile bouquets hanging outdoors greet the weary traveller and hold a promise of many wonderful things to come.

“Skip the appetizers”
Reviewed March 30, 2008

We were running late and only had time for an afternoon visit to sample the appetizers. We will give this place a second chance and eat off the main menu next time, and will forego the appetizers. The petite chile rellenos were dominated by a stuffing of cream cheese and a greasy breaded coating. The guacamole was unexceptional. I forget what else we had, it was so unremarkable.
The drive to the restaurant is through such lovely countryside - it makes the trip worthwhile.

Hatch may mean green (while you are in New Mexico look for a “green chile cheeseburger”), Chimayo red is the #1 chile! This is the BEST New Mexican food in the world--no slams on Old Mexico! New Mexican IS Old Mexican with a southwestern twist. If you understand the complexity of cocina Mexicana you will love this New Mexican contribution. I added this restaurant to Local Picks on a Monday and by Tuesday 6 people had found it and reviewed it! While you are in Chimayo look for El Santuario de Chimayo, the “Lourdes of America” a truly enchanting experience.
