Chimayo is located between Santa Fe and Taos and the drive is definitely worth doing as one can take a scenic route. Once there, be prepared for the unexpected. The complex comprises a number of churches and a cathedral where believers can collect a portion of sacred soil. The churches and cathedral are packed with children’s shoes, clothes, crutches and lots and lots of family pictures. I did not find the significance of this but whatever the reason is, it makes for an impressive sight as wall upon wall and parts of the ceiling are packed with those items. The decoration is naive and very poetic, almost like out of a fairy tale, not being disrespectful to the worshipers ... Definitely worth visiting !

This old pueblo church is a pilgrimage destination and it is interesting to see even if you aren't religious. The grounds are interesting with photos of loved ones to pray for, and other chapels and statues.

Parking can sometimes be an issue, I'm sure.

To really get a feel for the uniqueness that is rural Northern New Mexico, you simply must vist the Santuario in Chimayo. If old adobe could talk, you would hear amazing stories of spiritual renewal and answered prayers in this out-of-the way sanctuary. The side chapel gives vivid testimony of the healing and renewal that has occurred here, from the dozens of crutches left behind by worshipers who don't need them after their visit, the the hundreds of pictures people have posted of loved ones. Truly a journey of faith, Northern New Mexico style. Please remember that this is a house of worship, and respect their rules. Photography inside is not permitted, and, gentlement, please remove your hats.

If driving from Santa Fe, take the high road and make this your first stop. It's a sacred place and the churches are lovely. There is also a folk museum that is worth checking out. See the back of the sanctuaries for the holy dirt and the dedications to all those cured by the faith in this holy place.

in the off-chapel room, along with the holy dirt floor pot, are many crutches that supposedly were cast side by annual pilgrims
