Drove up from Santa Fe, easy to find. Because of vandals, they have installed security cameras. It was clean and they have done a lot of upkeep. Visiting was peaceful. Wish we had taken a picnic lunch. There's a little snack shop, but we did not eat there.

Very picturesque drive along the nearby highways. Make sure to spend a few hours taking the High road to Taos. Stunning and vast. Very stunning sanctuary in a peaceful town.

We decided to stop at the Sanctuario de Chimayo while doing the High Road drive from Santa Fe to Taos. Chimayo is about 40 minutes from Santa Fe. This beautiful and serene spot was so special. We were practically the only ones there at the opening time (just one other couple). The grounds filled with simple religious sculptures, small crosses from hundreds of believers tied to the fence along the entry path, and a large 3-sided room with a multitude of photos and prayers along one wall set the quiet, thoughtful tone for our visit. A cobblestone pathway winds its way to the church which was rustic and beautiful. We were surprised with how large the grounds were...like a small village. Well worth the visit. I'll also mention that it is well-behaved dog friendly (altho we didn't take ours into the church or inside other structures). And, it has public restrooms, which is critical if you're taking the High Road drive to Taos. Surprisingly there are absolutely no public restrooms after Chimayo until you get to Taos! The town of Chimayo is also worth visiting...check out their website www.chimayo.us.

Traveling from Santa Fe to Taos? Go back country and see a sacred sight! The church is amazing-the altar beautiful! We were the only people there and is was magical! The church is known for the healing dirt and a miracle that came out of the earth. Several gift shops surround the plaza, but they are not obtrusive at all! The church is a pilgrimage for the faithful, you should go as well!
