“Center and symbol of Catholic Faith”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 15, 2013

The Sanctuario is the holiest shrine in America, sometimes called the "Lourdes of America" for all the healings here. It is a functioning Catholic parish, but is a center of pilgrimages, mostly during Holy Week. Thousands crowd into the small square near the church building itself. There is a museum, Stations of the Cross, places to sit and meditate and a small room where there is "Holy Dirt", which pilgrims touch or take a small bag of for healing. The corridor is lined with crutches and photos left by people who have been healed. It may be one of the most photographed churches, in New Mexico, other than St Francis de Asis in Taos.

“A spiritual retreat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 14, 2013

Located in the beautiful mountains of New Mexico, Chimayo is an old Spanish settlement known for its weaving. Nestled in the town is this beautiful church. Upon entering the grounds of this old Spanish church you experience a feeling of holiness. The dirt in the church is said to have healing powers and many have experienced it. Thousands come yearly to visit. Every year on Good Friday hundreds of faithful make pilgrimage to the church. Worth the trip there. A must see.

“"A Moving Experience"”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 13, 2013

If you are moved by Faith you will want to return again and again. This quiet little chapel is a place of healing and believing as it has been for generations. People come to be healed by the "blessing of the soil", which is said to have great healing powers. The results of these healings is hanging on the walls of the small chapel, crutches, walking cains, and braces to name just a few. Believe and have faith!

“Lovely Church in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 1, 2013

We took a side trip off the road High Road to Taos to visit Chimayo - called a Sacred Road. You will find El Santuario de Chimayo, the Holy dirt church. Thousands of pilgrims & visitors come here. Some call this church the “Lourdes of America". There were quite a few tour buses when we arrived. We did not have a hard time finding a parking spot. There were crosses everywhere - even on the top of high hills. This church has been a National Historic Landmark since 1970. It was completed in 1816

Pilgrims come for spiritual & physical healing. The outdoor garden area was very nice.

There are a couple of gift shops that are worth a stop.

The village and the church are simply outstanding. Take some time to explore. You will be glad you did.

“A special place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2013

I love the old Spanish missions and this is no exception. The whole complex is worth visiting. El Santuario definitely has a feeling of holiness to it. And if you are not into "holiness" it is also a lovely example of the Hispanic culture and architecture.
