Owner description: The "Lourdes" of America, where miracles are thought to happen.

We enjoyed the great fortune of talking with the Mission Priest. I think the priest might have come in 1945. This priest has planted many trees and is responsible for the growth of El Santuario de Chimayo.

In the event that this is your first visit El Santuario de Chimayo is regarded a a holy church for performing miracles. For believers, there is a "Dirt Room," and a scoop of this dirt is claimed to be responsible for many miracles involving physical problems. So bring a container.

This church and the building surrounding the church was a very tranquil setting. The history is amazing and worth a visit.

This tiny village church, established in 1810, continues to draw thousands of visitors and pilgrims each year who seek healing. There is a mysticism to the place, honor to the Lord, and people of great despair who hold out great hope. You will see the lame, the crippled, the hurt ones, and more, kneeling in the tiny sanctuary. Through a short doorway is a small hole in the ground where all are invited to take home blessed earth. By rubbing mother earth on the affliction (heart, mind, limb), healing is invited in. An inspiring trip.

The church is beautiful, and I enjoyed the Nino Chapel. The artists who live in the area make amazing pieces - I wish I had packed a spare suitcase to bring more home!

This was our first visit to this most special place. If you believe God is still in the miracle business, this place is a must. The church is a quiet, contemplative experience that will give a calmness in a hectic lifestyle. You will come away feeling better than you have in a long time.
So glad we discovered it and you will too if you are near Santa Fe.
