“At Chimayo shrine, you find what you bring in your heart.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012

The shrine at Chimayo offers the peace of God, if you can slow down, quiet down and listen to Him speak. The physical surroundings are only a distraction if you are drawn to them instead of focusing on what is in your heart. I found peace of mind and hope everyone else can. Spend some quiet time in the chapel.

“Very interesting site”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 23, 2012

I was last here 20 years ago and it has been "improved" significantly since then. It is much more visitor-friendly now (including restrooms) but with progress it has lost some of the uniqueness in my view. Still, it is a special place that obviously has great meaning for many people. Even if you are not religious, it is worth the visit to see the sanctuary's interior and to see the sacred dirt.

“Catholic Disneyland”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 4, 2012

This place was once genuine, but now it is like a carnival of commercialism. The changes that have been made to the site, the parking, restrooms, snackbars, landscaping, etc. are detrimental to the historic feel of the place. It's tragic. I say, hit the High Road to Taos and visit any of those churces along the way.

“Hidden place of peacefulness”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 2, 2012

Chimayo is a wonderful hidden gem. We were fortunate enough to arrive in time to witness part of the morning service. We are not super religious but the inspirational power was obvious. The beauty and the history are amazing. Just across the road is a gallery which shows the talents of local artists. (If there is a man selling blended spices/peppers, don't miss out - they are awesome). Just a bit up the road is an area that is still being developed, it has the Children's Chapel, a must see.

This is the real mccoy - and old spanish chapel. There are several different chapels spread around the Santuary grounds and plans for explansion. It's a delightful stop if you are visiting the area..
