I was a bit apprehensive about selecting accommodations in Chama, NM, having hoped for a recognizable luxury branded hotel. It turns out that my family (including young children) were well treated at the Cumbres Suites... which was clean and tidy and comfortable... seems to be a family-run operation. If we come back to ride the Cumbres & Toltec Railroad, we would stay here again.

We stayed at the Cumbres Suites in large part due to the reviews on TripAdvisor and were not disappointed. For a bargain rate under $70, my wife and I got a unit with a queen bed, two double beds, a refrigerator, microwave, kitchen table, and stove. The continental breakfast, which someone else here had the nerve to complain about, featured juice, coffee, milk, bagels and cream cheese, cereal, and an assortment of other baked goods. The owners are wonderful, friendly folks who will do anything to help you out.

About the only area for improvement was that the couch in the unit was pretty old and needs replacement. It's not a perfect, spotless place, but for the price it's a steal.

We stopped in Chama for one night and chose the Cumbres Suites, they were spring cleaning for the summer season so not all rooms were available but this meant we got one of the largest! The room was huge with two double beds, a sofa, fridge and bathroom. Almost too big for 2 of us but would be great for a family.

The family who own and run the Cumbres Suites live in part of the building but we never felt like we were intruding in someones house as it's very well divided off. We met them and their dog on arrival and they were very friendly and welcoming.

Great value for money too.

Clean, spacious, cozy. Noisy, odd surroundings.

The young woman whom I made my reservation with was SUPER helpful and friendly.

The room was clean and spacious, but it was right outside the breakfast area, so we were awakened early by the cheerful breakfast eaters.

The "continental breakfast" consisted of a choice of sugary breakfast cereal, milk, chocolate milk, and/or plastic-packaged pastries such as honey-buns, etc. No fruit, granola, yogurt, etc.

The view out our window was of a deck with a hole where a hot tub used to be, now filled with weeds. Beyond that, the proprietors' and neighbor's junky, New-Mexico-style back yards. If it was my place, I would put up an attractive fence and fill the hot tub area with perennials.

Good luck, folks.

I called the Cumbres Suites to reserve our rooms. When my sisters and I arrived, (we were early) we had the wonderful opportunity of meeting Kip and Terri. They are wonderful people!! We had the most pleasant time there. The rooms were hugh, lovely, pleasing, very clean and practical. The whole lodge, was very practical and Kip and Terri were very accommodating. We absolutely loved it and we will definitely stay there again. I would recommend the Cumbres Suites to anybody. In fact, we've already done so. Sorry, we took no photos.

We've stayed at Cumbres Suites a number of times and returning feels like being home. The rooms are spacious, yet cozy...a true mountain lodge.

The hosts are always near enough yet provide such space we guests feel welcome. Wish we could be there more.

We were looking for a "road trip" motel, and did not want to spend a lot of money. While I did not find an internet link to the Chama Suites, it was listed on the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad website. The call to the proprietress, Teri, clinched it. This motel has got to be the best in Chama. Rustic, exceptionally clean, upstairs and ground level rooms. Everything looks like it was built in the last few months, but is just very well maintained. Reservations call 505-756-9139. Rates are very reasonable and include a continental breakfast. In June 2006 there were a lot of hummingbirds enjoying the feeders the owners put out.
