“Wonderful rustic experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 18, 2012

This was the second year in a row we spent in a clean, neat little cabin at the Elkhorn Lodge. The host, Jim, was very helpful and friendly. Our cabin was across from the river and we really enjoyed our time there. We plan on spending time there for many years to come. This was a great memory for our family. It IS rustic--hey, this is not the Hilton, yet it was very clean and comfortable.
Enjoy!

I just spent the weekend in Chama New Mexico and stayed at the Elkhorn Lodge in one of the bigger cabins and really enjoyed my stay. The cabin was nice and clean and had an old rustic feel to it. The staff was very pleasant and welcoming I also brought my dog who also enjoyed his stay. The property has the beautiful Chama River running through it where you can go fishing or just take a nice walk along it. There was also a place to bbq right ouside my cabin and sit outside and enjoy the suset.. I reccomend this lodge to anyone visiting Chama.

My daughter and I stayed here for a couple of nights in one of the cabins. I booked it in advance because I wanted to have a "real" mountain cabin experience without being too rustic for a 6 year old. Check in was ok and the staff was pleasant. The river is right behind the lodge and there is a nice trail along the river. The cabin was old and run down which would have been ok, but it was also dirty. There were old gum wrappers laying around, dirt and leaves all over the blanket on one of the beds, and the shower looked like it had not been cleaned in quite some time with old crusty soap on the ledge in the shower. The couch had numerous stains also. The oven pilot light had gone out and the entire cabin smelled like gas. We enjoyed ourselves in Chama despite choosing the wrong place to stay, but certainly won't stay here again.

There's a friendly dog living there, which is why the review is "poor" and not "terrible." My husband booked one room & we wound up with another, with the reason offered being that the requested room wasn't ready (which was scary, because the one we got wasn't truly ready for prime time either). In its defense, our room was fair-sized and the bed was okay. The bathroom had a ways to go yet. We got around not having a curtain on the bathroom window. But the shower was a shock. The tub was dirty and rusty, and the water was ice-cold and rust-colored. We did not use the bath/shower after that sobering experience.
It does go without saying there wasn't anything provided for breakfast, and the cafe is closed. When it was time to go, we had to deposit our key through a hatch in the door and hope they marked us as having left. Not that there wasn't anyone there to check us out; the desk clerk was outside, seated on a bench on the lawn, evidently on break. So not a whole heck of a lot there in the way of customer service, but my husband figured he'd contact them after we got home to find out what was up. A few days afterwards, he did call to relate our experiences and concerns (he'd been there many times and was very alarmed at the state of the facility). He received a cascade of excuses but no apologies. Here's hoping there's a radical change at the Elkhorn. It is in a beautiful area.

Room Tip: Go to a different lodge.

We stayed in 2nd floor hotel room #34. They should pitch the chairs inside the room (grungy) and replace the rocker on the balcony (splintery, falling apart). The place is in dire need of maintenance. Price was $89 +tax, which is really too high for this room. No a/c, which is normally not needed in Chama any way, but would've been nice.
Front desk clerk was friendly.

My husband and I have been staying at the LODGE for over 11 years. We even spent our honetmoon night in their special cabin. It's a great place to relax. Our stay in July was their cabin along the Chama River front. We even had a deer come out of the water right infront of us, while we were on the porch. The rooms are always clean. The cabins are true northern N.M. The Lane family (owners) make you feel at home and welcome. We stay at the lodge at least 2 or more times a year. It's a great get away from the city of Santa Fe.

This place is a disaster. Do NOT stay here. Stayed in the motel part of the lodge and had two rooms traveling with my family and my brothers. Our room was dirty, stains on the comforter, shower barely had any water pressure, tv remote didn't even have a battery cover. Sent the kids to get more pillows and they come back with pillow cases that were ripped and blood stained. My brothers room pretty much same condition with a bonus of the fire alarm hanging from the ceiling with no battery in it. To top it all off had to put up with loud music both Friday and Saturday night until almost Midnight since no one monitors there "10-7" Quiet hours. Went and spoke with Jill the Owner to express my concerns and she did give us a discount on the rooms but really didn't make up for what we had to put up with. When I went to express my concerns the grumpy old guy at the desk did give us more pillow cases but they were worse than the ones we got before?? Soooo after a long day there after all of this finally go to take a shower and housekeeping leaves ONE towell in a room that has my wife and two kids in the room-- Back to the office we have to go to get towels?? I know we were not staying at the Four Seasons but you do expect to have a clean room, running water, clean sheets and a comfortable place to sleep. None of the that is true for this place so like the title says keep on driving on by this place because you will be very disappointed if you stay here.

Room Tip: Run Down, Dirt, No upkeep to the place at all.
