Great B&B near historic Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Sep 14, 2017via mobile
The Parlor Car Bed and Breakfast is directly across the street from the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad station. It is located in a charming two story home home with three comfortable bedrooms. Each bedroom has its own private bath. Owners Wendy and Bonsall Johnson have operated this B&B since 1997. Bonsall also serves as a docent on the train trips and is a veterinarian in the Chama, New Mexico community. Wendy is an excellent cook and is very attentive to the guests. If you stay at the Parlor Car B&B, ask Bonsall for some tunes from the player piano in the living room. The photo in this review was taken from the front yard of the B&B.

Our stay was delightful. We benefited from the historical knowledge of Wendy and Bonsell, as well as the many available books in the library. Wendy's cooking was varied and delicious. The accommodations are terrific for a small town, low income setting with clean rooms and comfortable beds. We would definitely stay there again on a future visit to the Chama area.

Fifteen years in New Mexico and this was our 1st time on the infamous Cumbres Tolec Railroad. Shame on Us! We travelled Chama to Antonito by train and bused back to Chama. The stay at the B&B was nice but our room was just ok. The bed was too high and the in-room bath too small. My husband is 6'3" and definitely bumped elbows and hit his head in the shower and bath room, I"m 5'4" and it was too small but doable. The hosts are endearing and accommodating. House is starting to show the lack of upkeep and necessary repairs. We would definitely stop to visit but would not stay. Coffee served by the husband was great as is his player piano skills. Wendy is charming and a great cook. The town appears to be dying and that would be a shame. Please go to Chama, shop and take a ride on the train. It's a beautiful part of America.

Room tip: Choose the room downstairs.

This charming Bed and Breakfast is an excellent place to stay if you are going to experience the Chama-Toltec Train ride. The host and hostess are both docents on the train and have a wealth of information about the train and the local area and are very willing to share. Also the location is great as it is right across the street from the parking lot.

Highly recommend.

Spent 3nights during Chama Days. Location across the entrance to train parking lot--we left our car at B&B, away from the flying cinders coming off the train. Wendy made different hot breakfasts each morning. Bonsall entertained us with his player piano skills. Both made sure we had plenty of information to enjoy our days in the Chama Area. Plan to return to Chama to ride a longer train trip--plan to stay again at the Parlor Car.

For the second year I have stayed at this quaint location run by a nice couple. Wendy was able to do 10 breakfasts in a row with only one repeat in that time. The rooms are very nice and furnished with period pieces. The building was originally the home of the local bank president.
