We camped one night in the Valley of Fires; it was a lovely place to stay. Clean restrooms, quiet place. But, it was VERY windy; if you are camping in a tent, find a sheltered area. We went for a walk on the nature trails; it was fun to leave the path and scramble on the old lava flows.

This is a beautiful place to stop to have a picnic and stretch your legs. Make sure to take the trail and read all the informational signs - very interesting.

We visited early October 2009. I have never seen other lava flows, but I'm sure this one pales in comparison. In other words, you might be disappointed if you've seen the big ones. But being our first time, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and were very glad we decided to stop by. The paved walkway provided an enjoyable stroll and there were information plaques along the way about the lava and the wildlife in the area. You are allowed to leave the walkway and venture onto the flows. It made me a little nervous with the thin shelves and deep cracks, but it was fun. (Until we ran into a tarantula, then we were back on the path!). We walked extremely slow and even lingered for a long time, but I think we only spent about 1.5 hours. It is a fee area, but worth it if you've never seen a lava flow before.

The Valley of Fires might only be a field of old black lava in the middle of nowhere (sorry Carrizozo New Mexico), but it is definitely worth the time to see it if you are in the area visiting Ruidoso or on the way to Alamogordo. It is a small, well maintained recreational area with great camping and picnic sites and a paved walk through an old lava field. It's not as impressive as the Big Island lava fields, but we enjoyed it.

This is a field of old black lava with a short trail through it. . i'm sure its a good resource for the local schools. however, it pales in comparisons to similar sights elsewhere----the big island of Hawaii for example is far more impressive in this regard. Nothing bad about this----its just a minor sight.
