Ranked #2 of 4 things to do in Capitan

Adjacent to the Smokey Bear Historical Park, this museum is full of Smokey the Bear memorabilia that many folks remember from their childhoods. Great displays, some things for sale, and the lady running the place told us lots of great Smokey the Bear stories. Definitely worth the stop.

Staff in the gift shop was super friendly! The museum is very informative and interesting. Fun for kids and adults. Smokey the bear is buried on the grounds.

Here you can learn the story of Smokey Bear who is in fact a real bear found badly burned in the Capitan Gap area and nursed back to health to later become the "spokesperson" for fire prevention. There are all types of memorabillia, a short film about Smokey's life, a small theater which also shows films about Smokey, botanical garden which includes Smokey's final resting place. Very easy for those who have trouble walking, and very friendly and knowledgeable staff.

Smokey is buried here and the museum is informative and also has a great garden of native and local plants. The gift shop always has a goodie to add to my collection.
