The dzong which was the seat of power before the move to Thimphu is located on an island in a fast flowing river.
The trestle bridge providing the connect takes you back in time. The wood architecture is comparable to 'cathedral architecture, with no nailing etc.
A feat to the eye.

“One of the most special places in Bhutan”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2013

It is the center of spirituality and governance! There are other dzongs but this one holds a special place in all trips. We learn a lot about the history of Bhutan and of the monarchy.

This was a great Dzong which has been rebuilt since the floods and is interesting to walk through to see the day to day life and business that transpires within

“Impressive”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 4, 2013

The most beautiful dzong in Bhutan. It has a small muzeum inside. Taking a footbridge across a river it is a most amazing sight to see and visit.

“The most beutiful Dzong in bhutan”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 26, 2013

In the arm of Mo Chu(mother river) and Pho chu(father river), Punakha Dzong is the most beautiful Dzong in Bhutan. The royal weddinig was held here in 2011. Not like Thimphu Dzong and Paro Dzong located in the city, this one is located in a very tranquil Punakha valley and it looks like a gem in the painting. The people here seems simpler than those we met in other areas of bhutan.
