Forced my travel agent to book this hotel based on tripadvisor ranking. What a disappointment !!. There are multiple problems in this hotel. The rooms are not cleaned at all. The staff just make the bed and when we forced them to clean the room we could find a month's dirt coming out from all over. The carpets in the room have worn out and are not cleaned for ages. There are no TVs in the rooms but there is an entertainment room with a TV for guests. However, you can always find the hotel staff occupying this room with the sofas messed up with food eaten by their children. You can also see hotel staff sleeping on these sofas. The owner of this hotel keeps standing near your table when you are having food and beyond a point it becomes a great irritation. The only saving grace is the food quality.

it is considered one of the best places (for standard leverl) to stay in Bhutam Valley and i must say that my experience was really positive.
rooms are big, nice and cosy (but the picture in tripadvisor are a bit "too good).
service is great, personel (family) is very friendly and speak good English.
we have asked if it was possible to have Bhutanese food (majority of buffet dinner in Bhutan are unfortunately continental food). they were very nice and asked us to choose among different plates and they were also very happy to see that we were appreciating their food a lot.
definitly it is a good, cosy place to stay while visiting Bhumtang valley

My fiancee and I had a wonderful stay at JVL. The food was excellently prepared by a lovely lady, who is the owner's daughter. Room, although basic, was clean and comfortable with an attached balcony - perfect for relaxing with a book. The main draw of this place is the hospitality. Special thanks to Dasho Gasey Lhendup and his staff for taking care of us during our stay in JKL. My fiancee unfortunately fell ill and Dasho Gasey arranged for our trip to the local hospital, got his staff to send the meals to our room, loaned us lovely pictorial books of Bhutan from his library collection and even personally drove us one morning to visit temples in Bumthang. We were very touched and grateful for his thoughtfulness and hospitality. The staff always wore friendly smiles and were so genuine in their concern for my fiancee. I would highly recommend visitors to Bumthang to stay at Jakar Village Lodge. You will feel right at home!

This hotel has a lot of charm with its architecture and its locale with a view of the local dzong. Our room was comfortable with a cute little balcony and swing chair. The furniture and rugs were a bit mismatched but not really important. The one thing that could have been improved and that prevented a "very good" rating was the state of the bathroom upon our arrival. Multiple light bulbs were burnt out in the bathroom making it very dim. Also, the soap dish in the shower was dirty and held used soap. The soap dish next to the sink has new soap on top of a dirty sponge with hair on it (yuk). Clean is more important than decor! The absolute best thing about this hotel were the family running it. They provided wonderful service...always running out upon arrival with your key and query about what you might need. The food was very good (especially the dumplings!) and they provided French Press coffee in the morning with a roaring fire in the stove for extra warmth.

We had a not-too-pleasent experience at this place when we spent 2 nights here (March 21 & 22, 2012), even though it is rated highly on Tripadvisor.

The owner who also runs and manages this hotel tried to palm off some meals we didn't consume when he presented our bill. He claimed that since we had not informed them in advance that we will NOT be eating, we must pay! After 11 days and six hotels in Bhutan, I can safely say that THAT is not the practice in the country. No hotel has charged us for meals we did not eat nor has it said that we must inform in advance about not eating.

That said, the property is reasonably good and the owner does make effort to satisfy guests. However, I think that some age-of-property related issues are cropping up which the owner should fix. For instance, on the first day we realised that having a shower was difficult due to lack of water pressure. A few of the lights in the room were also not working and the heating was also inadequate for which the owner blamed the low voltage.

Sadly, the internet was also not working - for which the owner again said low voltage! He first claimed that it will not work in the room and only in the lobby. Then when it did not work even in the lobby he said it will work only early morning and late evening, when others are not using the bandwidth, When it did not work even at those times, he blamed it on the low voltage.

Anyway, because of the shower problem, next day they changed our room to the first floor - fortunately here it was all systems go and we faced no problems.

The food was nothing great - specially after Trongsa's Yangkhil Resort - and was of passable quality and taste.

There are couple of other issues that we had with the business practices of the owner that we were not happy about which I would leave out of this review but would be happy to share if someone were to pm me.

Again, most non-Indians may not be bothered about our experience since they will not be affected as they are covered by their daily minimum spend amount (currently $250 per day) anyway. But I would like to advise tourists not covered by the minimum spend limit to be careful in dealing with the owner at this property by making sure that they clearly discuss and understand how he bills for his services.

The hotel is build as per Bhutanese architecture & the interior of the rooms are decoratively painted. Good food, excellent service in the dining room The owner gave us lot of information & insisted to visit Gangtey which was not in our itinerary. He always accompanied us during meals & suggested various Bhutanese cuisine The views of the dzong and the valley are beautiful. The rooms do not have TV. After reading reviews in trip advisor, our expectations were really high & were slightly disappointed with the size of the rooms. Though they were not small, our expectations were very high.
