Lovely garden setting, clean beach. Simple, comfortable rooms, friendly staff. Nothing extraneous, just everything you need for a relaxing tropical getaway. Great food at the restaurant. We hired motos for 2 days, fun and flexible way to get around.

Enjoyed a few nights at Mai House which was so nice and relaxing. The staff very very accommodating and the rooms were neat and clean. The resort were well priced and very well located. Plenty of lounge chairs as well for chilling out. Highly recommended.

Nice Hotel with independent cottage style rooms . Sea facing rooms are nice . Perfect location ! The hotel has a nice area with sun beds where you can laze around all day read a book and watch the sun go down . Drink some sunset beers in a laid back atmosphere . Decent restaurant serving simple Vietnamese food and good cocktails . Rooms are simple and clean with all basic amenities. Over all a pleasant stay !

With such a slooow check out, you can't help thinking of all the things they could improve.
Be prepared for staring 15 minutes at your toenails even when there is no queue.
After a while someone from the restaurant appeared and handed over all the bills that we had put on the room. None for that day as we had eaten lunch elsewhere, but previous days.
The reception didn't ask us if we enjoyed our stay.
We said our taxi would arrive at 7 am the next morning. Nobody was there to say goodbye to. It's lucky that we anticipated this and settled the bill the afternoon before! The security didn't return our wave.

Don't get me wrong the beach is alright! If you don't mind ants jumping on you every 5 minutes. They also let locals fish on their "private beach" in the early morning with big nets, The loungers are alright and they offer towels. The bungelows are good. There is a hot shower and I liked the seats in front of the bungalow. The fierce set of "rules", next to the safe, state in funny English that there shouldn't be loud talking in the bungalow after 10 PM, I guess our neighbours didn't understand that, as we enjoyed their midnight chats.

The restaurant was good, but had tiny flaws. One lunch they brought around 12 chips with my sandwich, I almost laughed. Another time they forgot the blue curacao in a cocktail. I don't mind!

I didn't mind the 1 or 2 lice-like bugs crawling on the bed each night. Probably from the open ceiling. Coffee and tea wasn't refilled for 2 days.. Loud building noise at 7:30 in morning. It adds up.

I'm glad we spent time in Veranda (were even greeted by general manager - never seen the Mai House one), Hieu, Rory's beach,Palm Tree and the French Bistro on the corner.

On the last day I was actually glad to leave, some French claimed the beach by shouting over distances. They even took another family's football, so rude!

Room Tip: Take pegs so you can close the musquito net. The rooms in the middle next to the main path had much...

This place has so much potential to be truly the best place to stay in Phu Quoc, only if the management team is willing to take some corrective actions.
Mai House has a lot to offer (many of which have already been mentioned by other reviewers so no need to repeat here), but in my opinion the key advantages Mai House has, and this may explain WHY Mai House has received "higher" ratings than some thought it deserves:

1) There are not many worthy competitors in their price range from what we could tell
2) It's difficult to find availability in other "seemingly" better hotels in the Long Beach area that are equipped with A/C (a must for us, especially in the hottest season, April-May) even if you are willing to pay a higher price. So to increase your chance of being able to find a "nicer" place, book early
3) In my experience their restaurant staff was very nice, very attentive and polite. This is in contrast with a few other reviewers. Perhaps they were more "timid" due to language difficulty rather than "rude" as some reviewers reported
4) Mai House is right next to "Hieu", easily one of the best restaurants in Phu Quoc, if you can adjust your expectation in term of "speed of service"

The things that almost spoiled our vacation in Phu Quoc during our 4-day stay there at Mai House:
1) Either non-existent or intermittent WiFi access, even in the public areas (Hotel "Lobby" and Hotel Restaurant). The first 2 days we got zero access. After 2 days of complaining, they had their ISP to come and "corrected" the problem and it got a bit "better", i.e. it worked, but intermittently!!! The WiFi connection would drop constantly! Based on a recent review, it seems the intermittent WiFi issue is still there!!!???
2) The A/C unit would shut itself down every now and then. We were awaken one night soaking wet because the damn thing stopped running and could not be restarted!

Now, why would we allow such "trivial" things to almost spoil our vacation? It was because of the Mai House's Management ATTITUDE! Instead of OWNING UP to the issues and correcting them, their first reaction was to blame on something else!!!
a) As for the non-existent or intermittent WiFi access, they first acted as if they were not aware of the issue and then blamed it on "the rain last night" instead of immediately taking corrective action or better firing their incompetent ISP. Issues will always happen, and it's not the end of the world, but it is how people respond to them that matter (while not insult the customer intelligence in the process!). And no, it was not due to Phu Quoc being a remote island as we were able to consistently get WiFi access ANYTIME by walking to the hotel next door!

b) The same with the intermittent A/C! Instead of telling us upfront (and all their other guests as well) that we might experience a problem with the A/C due to intermittent electricity shortage on PQ island, and that there is a TRICK to get the A/C unit restarted again, their first reaction when we told them about the A/C not working was as if they were "surprised" that we had the problem and asked whether we knew how to use the A/C remote control properly!!! As we found later, and they also later admitted it, that the intermittent A/C issue is a known problem and a trick to get it restarted is to flip the A/C wall switch off and on to reset it every time it shuts down on its own. Hint: Set your alarm to wake you up every other hour so you can do that!

Mai House can really become a 5-star resort only if the Management changes their ATTITUDE and fixes some of the minor details! If not, it won't be long before the newcomers eat their lunch!

We stayed here for several nights in April 2013.
It is a really great location with a really nice private beach. It is nearby to many of the recommended restaurants on the Island.
The breakfast is pretty good with lots of fresh fruit and pancakes available to order.
The food and service in the restaurant is also good. The club sandwich good for lunch and there are lots of good asian dishes, which are also pretty good value in comparison to some other places. Only the fresh fish is expensive, but for that you just walk nextdoor to Hieu restaurant.
It gets a lower review because the service generally wasn't good. We had a couple of complaints which weren't dealt with properly. We were woken in the middle of the night by someone banging on our door, quite scary when you are in a bungalow with not a secure lock. This shouldn't really happen as they have security on the gate, so it was the hotel's fault, but they refused our request to change rooms (we saw other rooms empty), and they didn't offer any gesture to make up for this.
The billing isn't very well organised either, as they wrongly charged us forgetting we had already paid for the room.
Also the air-conditioning didn't work on our last night.
One tip - don't book via Agoda as it is more expensive.

We spent two nights at the Mai House in a fan-cooled bungalow.
Room was nicely outfitted, clean, with great hot water and shower.
Bed itself was comfortable but the mosquito netting torn in several places (Mosquitoes and no see-ums were present which is what happens in the tropics) but the fans were cooling.
No TV in the room (great!) and intermittent wifi.
Quiet place (although it is "family friendly") and the beach is clean and well maintained. Breakfast was good - fresh fruit, eggs a la carte, very good crepes and excellent coffee. We found service more than adequate but drinks and dinners cheaper up the beach or up the hill toward the main road.
Phu Quoc is a great place for relaxing and relaxing we did.
